Curious About Shakes

Recommended Posts

In another thread there was discussion about shakes. It seems alot of you drink them on a pretty regular basis and I am wondering why? Are they for nutrition or enjoyment? Are they a Meal Replacement or in addition too?

Please don't misunderstand. I am not saying anything is wrong with it... I just never was told to do it or felt I needed it for any reason. My Dr has me scared to death about empty liquid calories so I never thought to try them.

Can you tell me for what purpose you drink them? I appreciate the knowledge because I havent had once since the pre and post op Optifast required shakes..

Thanks

I will have a Protein shake for Breakfast several times a week. Sometimes my band won't allow anything with substance to go down until 10 or 11 a.m. A Protein shake (Atkins Mocha Latte) allows me to have something relatively healthy. It's also easily portable and goes on the road with me when I travel.

OK so you use it as a Meal Replacement. I have a SF carnation instant breakfast on some work morning too for the same reason... I dont think of that as a Protein shake. Maybe I am confused. Are the protien shakes more healthy?

I don't know the carnation nutrition label. Atkins has low sugar and decent Protein. I will also sometimes make a shake from GNC or like with 20 or more grams of protein. This is probably a crutch for me just to make sure I do get enough protein every day. Low thyroid, combined with heredity has left me with very fine and thin hair. Got the thyroid regulated and I want to make sure I don't lose any more hair, hence the Protein Shakes.

I make my protient drink to make sure I get the protient in all day I usually tske an hour to drink my coffee then 30-60 min for the shake 2 hours later I do oatmeal. this usually keeps me on track for not getting hungry before its time. I reslly do it to get the prtient all in.

CIB is high in suger for the Protein you get I try to be at 30 of protein for 200 cals. Premier Protein shakes from Costco/Sams is 30 g for 160 cals. My doctor does'nt want me having liquid calories either. I have Greek yogurt for breakfast daily (add 1/2 scoop whey isolate Protein Powder, walnuts and high protein Cereal ) More of a mushie than a harsh solid. Occationally I have a premier Protein Shake pre work out. At work I have lunch at 1 but due to commute and work out don't have dinner until 8:30 or so. If I don't have a snack I am starving.

Though post op we are supposed to get the majority of our necessary nutrients with our meals, there days when I know that i have not had sufficient Protein. A Protein shake in the evening makes up for those deficits.

I was advised not to use Carnation Instant Breakfast, because as others have mentioned it has too many calories and not nearly enough protein to meet the special nutrition needs of bariatric patients.

Protein shakes made with quality protein powder have the "biggest bang" for the greatest amount of protein for the number of calories.

Get in the habit of reading nutrition labels...you will likely be surprised at what you find!

Best wishes...

I am 5 months post op. I thought that at this point, I should be getting my daily Protein from foods not shakes. Well, I had a doctor's appt last week. I was told that I should keep drinking Protein Shakes because food alone does not provide enough daily protein. I guess all surgeons have different opinions.

Thanks

I drink Protein shakes as a meal replacement in the morning...the one i usually drink is a soy Protein shake that is 170 a scoop per 8 ounces. I brought a shaker bottle when i was doing my pre op diet so i just use that to measure. I take 8 ounces of fat free milk, which i would check the calories on the mill i try to buy milk that is 90 calories and the only place i can find it is stop and shop but just look around.

Honestly, i switch it up one week ill drink shakes for breakfast and one week ill eat a 1/2 a cup of food just your preference. What i have noticed is having six small meals instead of three has helped alot. I eat alot of fruit and yogurt as well.

I also tried to keep track of all the foods i eat and calories that are in them. Im also considering becoming a vegan or a Pescetarian because i have a hard time with alot of meats and plus i would miss chicken, red meat, or pork.

Hopes this help

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
