Daily Calories

How many calories per day do you recommend for optimum weight loss? I've been doing 1200 but I see several people here do 1000. My fitness pal tells me that low amount would put me into starvation mode. I'm consistently losing 2lbs a week right now and have 40 lbs left to lose to hit my goal weight. I'd sure like to speed things up!

It's funny to see this posted because I asked my doctor about this last Friday when I went in for a fill. I told him I use my fitness pal and it recommends 1300 for me. I never get anywhere near that. He told me that my fitness pal is great, but isn't only a lapband patient app/website because it doesn't take the band into consideration. He said that aiming for 800-1000 calories a day is good. We have to eat less, so we would have to eat worse and higher calorie foods to make the goal that my fitness pal gives us.

He said the app/website is still good to use, just note that the calorie goal it gives isn't going to be right for a banded patient. I've been banded since February of this year and have lost 75 pounds, and I almost always hover around 800-900 calories, sometimes a little less.

Good luck!

2 lbs each week is fine... Don't be ashamed of any type of steady loss. If you are satisfied at 1200 calories a day and you are losing ...that's wonderful!

I agree with Floridays. There is no one size fits all diet or calorie plan for everyone. What works for one person won't work for another. You're losing 2lbs a week so what you're doing is obviously working very well. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Sound like you are doing great. I am losing 1.5 lbs a week and my doctor says I am right on target. I get about 1250 calories a day. I was told each person is different, so you have to find what works for you. I was eating 800 a day and wasn't losing, my body was holding the fat, once I increased the calories the weight started coming off. I am guessing I will have to reevaluate this every so often with my weight loss, but for now that works. Even though I eat 1250 calories a day I eat healthy foods- good lean Protein, fruit and veggies.

As long as you are losing I would keep steady. Great job on your success.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
