Are Sugar Free Carbonated Drinks Okay?

Recommended Posts

I was told carbonated drinks stretch your pouch. Any thoughts on that? I miss bubbles so much and 4 weeks post op.

I miss my club soda with lemon wedges. I never did drink any diet sodas so this was my comfort. I too miss the bubbles and getting that full feeling once it hit my stomache. However, I will not take any chances at all swigging or sipping one down knowing what those cool refreshing bubbles do to our stomaches. It makes sense, we like it because the carbanation gives us an almost a bloated feeling when we drink it, well thats because their are gases inside that once inside the stomache 'pushes' upwards and expands (don't you notice everytime you drink one you have to let out a belch), its gas. This can cause our new pouch to stretch, sometimes even causing the band to slip!

Oh, how I miss the bubbles, but you won't catch me taking that chance now.....

My doctor said NO and NO carbonated drinks at all! This is the hardest thing I've done!!! I have to keep in mind that a soda isn't worth me wasting all the money I have put into the surgery.

My doc and nutrtionist said no, I have friend who was told it was okay on occassion only if it was light colored. I have tasted a little 7 up once, but it made my belly hurt, so I just live with out soda. I use crystal light to spice up my drinks.< /p>

Thank you all for sharing. Was hoping it was a myth. I too won't risk it.

My surgeon says absolutely no carbonation and I've read studies saying no carbonation. The reason isn't that it stretches your pouch- it's liquid so it passes through the band immediately. The problem is the carbonation expands in your stomach below the band, pushing up on the band, potentially causing a slip.

When I was in the hospital having my Lap Band surgery, the woman sharing my room was in for a band replacement. She had been drinking soda and not only did her band slip, but her stomach actually prolapsed up through the band. She also regained 40 pounds.

I haven't had a carbonated beverage since I was banded 8 months ago and refuse to ever again. It's just not worth the risk.

I was told no carbonated drinks. It was hard for me, not the bubbly part, but the caffeine. I thought I would die. I get horrible Migraine when I don't have caffeine, and I am NOT a coffee/tea drinker. Once I found Crystal Light Energy, which has caffeine, I was fine. I gave up pop (or soda as some call it) and haven't looked back! :)

My dr would not band me without the promise of never ever having a carbonated beverage again!

He did day I could let one get flat then drink it. So I tried it once.... Yuk!

Somehow diet coke didn't go out of business as I though they might since I drank a ton of it. Now days Water, Flavored no calorie waters and iced tea no sugar of course are my new best friends!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
