Weight Loss After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Monday 9/10. When I weighed myself yesterday I had gained 5 lbs according to my scale. I've hardly consumed anything just some broth and Protein Shakes. I weighed this morning I was down a lb from the day before but still up 4 from surgery. Could it be my excessive bloating from surgery causing the weight gain?

For sure! They put saline in the IV that makes you retain some Water. I know it's hard but try not to get on the scale every day. I weighed in once a week while I was loosing. Congrats on your surgery!

Your main priority right now is to focus on healing not weight loss. Many many new bandsters have experienced the same thing you have, as its very normal. Your new stomache is healing and will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to do so. Get in plenty of fluids, this is going to be what you need to heal, especially when these weeks are crucial. Water, gatorade, apple juice, keep yourself hydrated. Make sure you focus on Protein as well.

When following your food plan your surgeon or nutritionist gave you, your weight will come off. Patience, patience, patience...

Best of luck and see you around the forum :)

congrats on the surgery but let me say that (weighing so close after surgery is just silly). as the poster said with the fluids and such, you will (most likely but not always gain). i would suggest to stop weighing for a couple of weeks and allow yourself time to (fully heal). you will be swollen/bloated (maybe some pain but i sure hope you are the lucky one w/no pain what so ever).......and i do not want you on that scale saying (gained) and you get all upset. most of the time its not because you (gained weight). its Fluid.

anyhow, congrats on your surgery. stay positive and stay off the scale for a while. you will do fabulous :)

I think everyone who had the surgery wants deep in their heart to wake up skinney , Think about it you admitted you were fat, you went to a Dr., you followed a pre surgery diet, you wrestled with your choice, you shelled out the big bucks, or prayed to the Insurance gods, went under scared and woke up hurting at least in a perfect world you should at least not gain 5 lbs. :o

Stay off the scale , eat what they tell you, :) eat when you are hungry :P in the amount you are suppose to eat, let your body heal and walk . B) And you will find yourself right where you want to be in perfect world..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
