I Don't Get This About Drinking After Eating...

Recommended Posts

Per my surgeons orders, I am not to drink 30 min before or after eating. The reason so that the food sitting in the pouch won't just wash through defeating the purpose of the band to help you feel not hungry throughout the day. But won't the food just wash through after that 30 min anyway? I don't get it

If you eat...and drink while you are eating or you eat and then right after drink it will wash it down faster than if your stomach worked it down on its own. If you eat and drink you will be able to eat more because you are just pushing the food through. Turning it into a Soup pretty much. Causing you to overeat

Right I get that, but what's the difference between 30 minutes after? seems like the food would wash down then and you'd be hungry again.

It's something to get you to practice good habits. Gets you out of the habit of drinking with your meals. Trust me. You will be happy you waited in the end. If you always drink with your meals you will end up eating more and not even notice. Causing slower weight loss. It might seem silly at first but if you go awhile without drinking with your meals and then go awhile drinking with your meals you will tell the difference

I used to get this but I don't anymore. The latest info is that food moves through the band in approx 1 minute, it doesn't sit there so drinking straight after eating shouldn't be a problem. Drinking whilst you are eating can be a problem as it may make the food too soft and wash it past the vagus receptors which are the areas that we want the food to stimulate so that we get that satisfied feeling earlier.

i would have to disagree with these new "findings" mentioned above. food defintely defintely stays in my pouch way longer than a minute. if i drink right after i eat=puking big time. your stomach is a funnel essentially. if you eat solids, they are in the funnel and blocking the bottom of the so called funnel until the stuff is digested. if you block and bottom of a funnel and then pour liquid into it what happens? the liquids can't drain through and have no where to go and the funnel will overflow=puking

I still have a problem with this, I am suppose to wait a whole hour after eatting. However, I can only make it to 30 minutes, sometimes I sip liberally or I might drink a good amount of Water right after. I never drink while eating, always after. I feel guilty I can't hold out, but I never had any issues with this. Maybe its because my band is empty., I do always feel full for a long while, and don't experience hunger while doing this, as of yet anyway...

I was told not to drink the 30 min before and after , to keep the nutrients in the stomach longer, AND to keep us full longer.Water will only push the nutrients through quickly and we need all we the nutrients we can get. Jus my input:)

Originally my Dr told me it was so the food wouldnt wash down too fast. But I find if I forget and drink too soon before or after I eat I usually cannot keep down whatever I am eating. he Dr explained it as the liquid pushes the food back up....

Oh fiddle sticks. I drink when I eat. If you only have a saucer of food, what's the difference. I only drink like a cup while I eat instead of the usual 32oz before bein banded.

I never thought I would get used to not drinking with my meal but it works...if u need a tiny sip do so. The one thing I have to remind myself is to drink at all other times!!!!

The thing is with drinking with your meals is to not drink till the food has passed through the band. You need to eat the right type of food with the right texture so as it passes through the band it makes contact with the nerves so those nerves then send a message to your brain to say hey you're no longer hungry, which happens at about the 20 minute mark. Now if you drink before the food has passed through the band then it will Water it down and won't be of the right consistency to help get that satisfied feeling. So as it has been explained to me by my surgeon and my nutritionist, yes it's fine to drink with meals if you need to BUT wait till the food has gone through, take a sip, wait a minute, then eat. I've been following this rule and I have not had any problems hitting satiety at the 20 minute mark.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
