What Is The Deal With Ibuprofen?

Recommended Posts

I have seen some old posts on here from 2010, regarding this issue. What is everyones experience? I am going to my doc tomorrow for a fill and I will ask him too, but I am wondering what everyone else has heard. I am taking painkillers still for lockjaw and I only will take percocet now, b/c I remember a post here saying ibuprofen was a no go.

Any help?

Stephanie

Some docs want you to steer clear of NSAIDs because they can lead to ulcers and stomach erosion, therefore band erosion via the stomach.

I've taken Ibuprofen almost daily for 8 months since surgery with no problems. My surgeon is well aware of it, too. His logic is, I never had issues with Ibuprofen before surgery so there's no reason I should suddenly start having them now.

Tums are a life saver! My doctor told me to really avoid pills because I have to chew the pills in order for them to pass through the band and some pills are meant to be slowly released. When you chew it up it can mess up the stomach. In some cases causing stomach cancer. I take liquid pain meds. (kids stuff). P.S. Aleve burns soooooooo bad!!! Never chew those

I was told I can take it but am supposed to take prilosec directly after....idk I steer clear of it unless I am having lots of back pain...I don't take the prilosec after though...I rarely take it anymore...they told me it leads to ulcers faster in band patients

I was taking meloxicam for years for arthritis...and now am allowed half the dose every other day (prescribed by my PCP, surgeon does not know). Without some form of NASID, ti would be near impossible to move around. When I had my pancreatitis attack, I was allowed to have an Advil Liquigel every 6 hours as needed.

NASIDS are known stomach irritants, and as such can cause ulcers. I've taken Prevacid for years, and never had any issues with the NASIDS until I got my band...the Advil gives me horrible reflux, even with taking Prevacid daily.

I'm still undecided which is worse...constipation from opiate based pain meds, or the reflux from ibuprofen...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
