When Can I Start Doing 1Hr Walks?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm a week out from surgery and other than my port site I'm suffering no real pain anymore (my port tends to hurt when I move around too much or when I lie on it etc)

Anyway I live with my parents and my father is an avid exerciser and desperately wants me to start doing 1 hr walks around our neighborhood with him. I'm happy too but i don't want to hurt myself or push myself too quickly.

Just wondering when the ideal time to start walking would be and what other people's experiences were?

I also want to go back to the gym and do weights etc but I read you had to wait 6-8 weeks!

Thanks for the help :-)

You can start walking as soon as you like, however I wouldn't jump right in with an hour long walk. You're still very much in the healing phase and though you might feel fine, it's very likely you will find you're worn out and tired a lot quicker than usual right now. I'd start with 15-20 minutes, see how you do, then gradually increase from there.

Admire your enthusiasm, but Missy is right. Yo uare still heaing. If you're up to it, start with 20-30 minute walks, and see how that feels. Don't start the gym quite yet. I don't think you're supposed to lift any weight more than 15-20pds for like 4-6 weeks, so take your time.

Congrats on being banded!

Thanks for your help both of you.

I think I'll start doing 20 min walks over the next few days and if I'm still feeling good in a week, increase it a little more.

Loving being banded :-) although having no restriction ATM is very hard! Always hungry but I'm hanging in there :-)

I was up to 40 min walks after 1 week. Advice- take a cell phone incase it is too much and you need a lift back. Don't apologize for it either. People don't understand that although it is laproscopic it is till surgery and your body needs to heal.

Remind your dad you did this for you and will begin exercising and how long when your ready not when he is.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
