Considering Lap Band Pending Insurance Approval

Recommended Posts

Im 29years old and weigh212 lbs my bmi is 37 and I have high blood pressure, pre diabetic, insomnia, degenerative discs, I have already had to have back surgery due to a really bad herniated disc and I currently have another herniated disc but it isn't surgical yet. The herniated disc caused nerve damage to my foot resulting in foot drop which has caused me to put on 10 lbs in three months, and because of the foot drop excercising is very limited...I should have five years of documented obesity with my doctor. I have unitd health care and really hope they cover the surgery. Do you think I'm a good candidate?i really believe this would improve my way of life and maybe allow me to live a longer, fuller life...so if anyone has any guesses or opinions of wether I'll be covered and if I'm a good candidate????thanks. Jennifer

Find a local seminar on the lap band and go to that. It should be your first step. You will get to find out all about how it works and if it is right for you. You will also get to ask questions of the doctor. You need to decide if it is right for you, it's just a personal choice.

Read the posts on here and other sites and do your research.

The fills are something you need to do. My cousin is 4 years out and only sees the doctor once a year now, I am 3 months post-op and I see the doctor monthly.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
