Too Tight? Or Stomach Irritated?

Recommended Posts

So I need some advice please. I was banded in March 2012, have lost 55 pounds so far. I haven't had much trouble, vomiting every once in a while (I'd say once a week or so) when I've gotten stuck on various items.

In the past week, I've noticed a tiny, tiny bit of acid reflux. Isn't worse at night, is just worse in general. Is not enough to even bother me, have just noticed it.

Yesterday I ate tuna salad with a little romaine lettuce. It was very little, probably 1/2 cup. After I ate it, I vomited, and I do mean vomited it all up. It wasn't like a pb, it seemed like a real vomit. (sorry, I know that's gross).

I should have not eaten dinner at all last night, but I thought I could do Soup. So I went to a chinese place and had hot & sour Soup. Vomited after that as well. (too chunky I'm sure).

I don't feel bad (like a stomach virus), but am getting concerned. I can keep down fluids, no problem. I don't want to ignore a too-tight band, or a possible slip. (paranoid).

I only have like 3 or 4 cc (can't even remember) in my band, haven't had a fill since probably May. Can a band just get too tight on it's own without any other fills/issues? Does this sound like the start of a slip? Ugh. If it's not better by Monday I'm going to call and get in with my surgeon. Any advice?

I could have written this myself!!!

I was banded 2/14/12, with no problems until 3 weeks ago. Like you, started w/mild reflux then I had to make myself vomit after meals to feel relief.

My doctor took out 0.75 cc and it felt like heaven. Instant relief. I now have about 5.5 cc in my band. The bad part is that now I feel that I could eat more since my restriction is not as much as before. I still measure everything out and haven't gained, yet I feel I need a teeny fill which I have scheduled for October.

My doctor gave me a prescription for an x-ray incase the symptoms returned, but so far so good.

My band was indeed a bit too tight and had irritated my stomach. Best of luck to you!

First, if you're actually vomiting not PBing, you need to let your surgeon know immediately. Vomiting puts you at real risk for a slip and the band shouldn't be resulting in regular vomiting.

Acid reflux can be a sign of a band too tight.

I would be getting into your surgeon ASAP and be sure to tell him all this.

It sounds like your esophagus and stomach pouch are inflamed after the vomiting-eating-vomiting thing. Call your surgeon and follow a liquid diet until you get to the bottom of this.

I have found that I just can't do lettuce anymore regardless of the kind. Pain & suffering quickly follow.

I second the idea of liquids to let everything settle down and call your surgeon for a little unfill. It's amazing what even the tiniest amount can do for relief.

Good Luck!

Hi,

So for those that had the band too tight and had to let some Fluid out of the band, did you get it put back in later down the line?

i am afraid that if i try to fill again, it will hurt like last time. i am hoping that i just got too much at once and i just need to start getting smaller fills. i hope this isnt all i get filled with (3.5 cc's).

(my first fill was 3 cc's and then my 2nd fill was 1cc... then had to get .5 taken out because it was hurting too much.) :(

thank you

My next fill Is scheduled for 10/9.... I feel like my restriction is not as it was before. Since I had 0.75 tAken out, I'm expecting a small fill... Maybe 0.25 or 0.5 if that..

I've had two unfills. After the first one I was refilled the amount taken out plus some. The last one was a few months ago. I got a fill in November. In Feb it got very tight. I loosened up a bit, but not enough. In June I had some taken out and haven't need more put in, but my surgeon is willing if I decide I do need more.

Don't worry so much about the amount in your band. Focus on how you are feeling. Everyone's body reacts different to the band and fills. I have only had one fill. May need another some day, but I focus on how I feel after eating a cup of food, not how many times or how much is in my band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
