gadgetlady 4 Posted March 23, 2006 Generally, surgeons feel it takes 100 surgeries to be proficient. That being said, if he's done a quantity of gastric bypass (laproscopic), I would imagine the actual number of lap bands vs. gastric bypass would be less important. It's really the laproscopic part that's the big deal, in my understanding. Not trying to talk you out of it and I know nothing about your dr, but if it were me I probably would try to find someone else -- UNLESS I had met with him and a few others and he inspired the most confidence. Scott F 0 Posted March 26, 2006 I guess I'm going against the flow on this one. I would look for a surgeon who has done many more than 13 lapband procedures. I have seen a couple of medical studies which compare, for example, the first 200 lapbands done by a surgeon with the second 200. The results, mainly erosion and slippage are much better for the second 200. One such study is posted on the FAQs and References forum. However, besides the doctor having more practice the lapband surgical technique (as practiced by all surgeons) may also have changed during this time. Of course surgeons new to lapband would be using the latest surgical procedures.
