My 1st Pains...banded 3/13

Recommended Posts

i ate lunch about an hour ago, and since i stopped eating, i have a constant, dull pain under my left lower rib, right about where i suspect my friend is. This pain reminds me of a less intense version of the pain i usually get in my side when i walk too much/fast after not exercising for a while. i can also relate this pain to gas pains i have had inthe past.

i am on mushies and ate chicken salad for lunch. i pretty much have a steel gut, and probably could have eaten a steak the day of surgery, if it werent for my band needing to heal into its new place.... This pain is puzzling me...:D

Any suggestions?

Hi Roni,

When I first got my band (2/13) I felt that pain too when I went on mushies. It does go away. I noticed when I ate a little too much is when I'd get that feeling. You are definately still healing and perhaps your pouch was so full it pulled a bit? If it's very painful and doesn't go away I would call your surgeon.

That pain just under my left ribs where the port is took me a little over 4 weeks to go away. Lots of work is done in that area, said my surgeon, so it definately takes time hence the reason they tell you to not pick up more than 15 pounds for the first 8 weeks or so or to do abdominal exercises.

Hope that helped.

Sherry

Oh isn't it a trip learning it? Don't eat to fast or too big of a bite..ohhh I learned that the hard way. I think I wore a hole in my hallway rug hee hee.

Hi Mini. Like you I 'm having a hard time interpreting the sensations. Despite this, your doing so well. Good for you.

Your post brought up a question I have been wondering about and that is stretching the pouch and slippage. I'd like to know more on it to avoid it.

Also, if no one ever mentioned it, watch for the "runny nose". A sure sign that maybe you better push back from the table. I'd of never believed it until I had gotten banded, but know I look for that sign first, or if I am begining to get a stuffy head it's time for me to quit (at least for me).

Wow...you're on mushies already? I was on liquid for two weeks post op and I still got that same pain you described. It did go away eventually...the hardest thing to learn, IMO, is to slow down and not take as much food/drink in at once like I used to. I still catch myself doing that and...lo and behold!...i get pains like the one you described!

It took a lifetime of bad eating habits to get us to where we are now...it's going to take longer than a week or a month (in my case) to unlearn them all!

I'm glad you're feeling better.:clap2:

my doc seems to have a pretty liberal routine for returning to foods. he gave me written instructions.

24-48 hours-liquids( and he listed what he approved )

2 days - 4 weeks-mushies- his nurse told me he didn't care of you ate chicken, as long as it went in the blender first. I don't actually blenderize it, but i chop it with a butcher knife on a cutting board, I like to play like I am Emeril, chop chop chop chop chop chop. I like to add some ranch dressing to it and eat it as a chicken salad.

After 4 weeks-regular diet as tolerated.

I haven't had any restriction that I can feel. I do get full when I eat, but I really do not feel the fullness until I have stepped away from the table. I make myself a small portion, and when I finish it, I leave the table. Otherwise, I think I could eat a whole chicken.

I think I could drink 16 oz of Water at once. I am afraid to try it, but I can drink at least 4 oz at once. gulp gulp gulp. I am scared to try any more than that. I do not think I had ANY swelling of the tummy under my band.

I am really concerned that my band won't imbed in scar tissue. How can the doc check for that?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
