A Silly Question But I Honestly Don't Know

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a question to anyone who can answer it... I just got lapband on 8/28/12... And I have to go for my fill in 6wks..

I was told that I have to follow a liquid diet for 2wks, then muchy soft foods 3wks after that... And so on...

My question is.... On the day of my surgery, is my lapband filled? Is it just the band alone? Sorry if I sound uneducated about this but I honestly don't know.. only because I feel hungry at times & I know when people get their lapband filled, they're not..

I think most people get the band with no Fluid to start. The band itself is a Major change.

I believe there are different kinds of bands also. Mine will only hold a few ccs', but I have seen others hold more then ten.

Some surgeons do "prime" your band with 1 to several cc's of Fluid at the time it is placed. Many surgeons leave the band empty until your first fill.

My surgeon left my band empty until my first fill, done 14 weeks post op.

And remember, as I used to tell my students, the only dumb question is the one you wanted an answer to and did not ask! That's what this forum is for...to get information and get educated about the band.

Do some research on this forum searching the words Bandster Hell. That will let you know what to be prepared for before you have enough fills to reach restriction. How many fills it takes to reach restriction is a very individual thing. For me, it was four, and my doctor is pretty aggressive.

Spoke to my doctor, he said he just placed the band but didn't fill it up.. that will happen on my first fill. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
