Still Indecisive

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am having my first consultation with a Dr. I met at a seminar a few Weeks ago. I will be self pay since my insurance will not cover the lap band because I don't have serious complications from being obese.

I have wanted to get the lap band for about 8 years now but my family has not been supportive. I am now married and my husband has decided to back me up and help me through this journey, which is great and a big relief but I am still deciding if it is worth 15,500

I guess I just need some advise from someone that has been through a similar situation.

Thanks for any advise. :-)

No doubt, it is a major decision...one to be made only after careful deliberation and conducting considerable research. If you want to be successful with weight loss, it will require a life long commitment to change your relationship with food, eat healthier, and exercise.

If you are young enough, you are fortunate that you have no weight related comorbidities...but generally they do present with age and the physical toll of extra weight through the years.

It would help for you to write down a list of the reasons why you want to have this surgery. And, if you've done your research, then you already understand that the band is only a tool; you have to learn to use it as it was designed to be successful with weight loss.

It might also help if you were to locate a local support group and attend a few meetings. This forum is also a place to come and ask questions...there are many knowledgeable and successful participants here that are willing to share their best practices and information.

Best wishes as you consider your options!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
