Insurance Issue ;-(

Recommended Posts

Do anyone know of any insurances that will cover the lap band. I already consulted with a surgeon and got all my work up for the procedure. However my insurance will not cover it. My bmi is 40 so I automatically qualify but I am willing to change my insurance at any cost. Then if i do purchase insurance what is the grace period in which i would have to wait? Any suggestions? Next step for me is a loan which I am trying to void

I didn't have to wait with united health care true results has already sent my stuff and they already said they cover with no wait for pre existing problems so I guess it just depends on if they have a wait for pre existing health issues I'm going with true results

If ur insurance is through ur employer they may not have lap band coverage under the plan

If it is individual insurance (u pay all premiums) then it would depend on the plan u choose if it is covered and any waiting periods check with the broker or the ins company

If you find a new insurance that covers WLS, it seems like the waiting period could be up to a year, it really depends on the plan. I was added as a dependent to my step-mom's plan this year and was immediately able to go forward with surgery.

Keep in mind that you will most likely have a deductible and out-of-pocket max (OOP) to satisfy for any insurance. I paid all of my OOP of $3000 on all pre-surgery requirements. Also, some plans do not have a cap on yearly spending, so if you have an 80/20 plan, you will have to pay the full 20% of surgery cost.

I would also encourage you to research self-pay in your area as well, just in case you can find a Dr who is reasonable. There is also CareCredit, which usually offers no interest if you pay of the balance within 12-18 months.

I would also urge you to ask human resources if the upcoming policy for 2013 will include WLS- a lot of insurance companies are adding coverage because it is cheaper for them in the long run.

I think it is a good suggestion to speak with your employer to see if your insurance may be changing in 2013. It is your employer that has opted out of covering that; however, many are easing up as the earlier post mentioned since the cost of surgery is cheaper than the health risks of no surgery.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
