I Spent An Awful Night

Recommended Posts

Somehow I developed a tickle in my throat last night -- I was sick a couple of weeks before I got banded, so maybe that was it, or allergies....who knows?

I spent an awful night coughing, trying not to cough, worrying about coughing.....it's quite painful when you're newly banded.

First of all, thank God I have an abdominal binder. If your surgeon hasn't suggested one, I recommend getting one for early recovery. It's like a velcro girdle that just holds everything in place.

Second, I develop crazy monkey mind after midnight....I was up in absolute terror that during a particularly robust cough I was either going to slip my band (it's kind of like the same movement as vomiting, right?) or I was going to open my incision and send my port shooting across the room.

I didn't get to sleep until three, mostly out of worry.....gah!

This morning I still have a little cough (I sneezed a few times too, also not fun) but everything seems to be in place.

Anyone else have a cough in early recovery?

Oh no, I'm so sorry. That's awful! If I were in your shoes, I'd call your surgeon, just to make him aware of what's going on. It's so soon after surgery it's always better to error on the side of caution. Perhaps he can give you something for that nasty cough too.

Feel better soon!

definitely call your surgeon in my 2 wk post op they specifically asked me about coughing for some reason. I get a tickle here and there but thats it, i totally understand the need of a binder though i had one for my gallbladder but not for this even those tiny coughs hurt something fierce. I wish you luck hon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
