Hi all i have been down the long road for the Gastric band. I started to pre opp diet and on tuesday morning went to derby for the opp.

When i was brought round i was told the opp didnt go ahead because my liver failed to reduce in size even though i lost 20 pound in weight.

So i have now got to do the pre opp diet for 4 weeks and then go back to derby for another go.

Why did the liver fail to shrink

OH NO! That is too bad. I don't know why, my Dr said the liver shrinks quite a bit with initial weight loss but I know it is always a worry. At my Hospital you wake up with an incision cuz they do it open instead of laproscopic. But that is quite a healing process.

Well... keep at it, it will go fast and best of luck to you!

It could have been that although you lost weight that you didn't follow the correct diet. This is why the Dr's have very specific prediet requirements. This happened to another member a couple of years back, she had also lost weight but had not followed the diet she was told to. The second time she followed the diet strictly and there were no problems.

All the best for band surgery take 2!

Yea that is scary, I think all of us going into this type of surgery worries about our liver not shrinking. I mean you lost 20 pounds and one would think that would be enough to perform gastric banding. Its so crazy to think that some surgeons don't even require a pre-op diet. It certaintly sends mixed signals around the board. However, we now have full proof that you need to stay strict to what 'your' surgeon's requirements are...

You can do this FOXY747!!!!

I did not have to do a pre-op diet I think it depends on your weight before surgery. :)

My pre-op was 99% Protein shakes,SF Jello cups and some greek yogurt. I did this diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery and my liver shrunk considerably.

Hope it works for you next time. Be positive!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
