New With A Dilema!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have just discussed the lap band surgery with my primary doctor. To my surprise he told me he has been banded, so has his wife and sister and mother! He said I qualify as my bmi is 36. I am covered by my insurance but I have to call to check the requirement s. My dilema is this, I'm 40 next month. It took us 6 years to have a baby, we did several rounds of ivf. My weight was not a factor for my infertility. My son is now 15 months. We have frozen embryos which I want to use but I feel like my time to have a successful pregnancy is running out. Do I get a lap band, lose weight and try to get pregnant 12 months after? Or get pregnant in the next few months and revisit the lap band surgery after I have a baby. I only gained 14lbs while pregnant and lost it all within a few weeks. I'm so unhappy with myself with my current weight, it has been a source of severe depression and anxiety for decades. Ive basically been.on a diet since I was 8! I'm sure you can all relate.

Thanks in advance for any replies and opinions on the pregnancy issues.

Abbie

I hate to have you put this life change on hold but, I would have another baby 1st.

keep in touch with this site, try eating the way we do, drink Water like crazy. start an exercise program. I know others have had babies after the band placement. the ticking clock is a definite part of the thinking process for you.

you can come back after the baby and then you will have the best of both worlds; children and a healthy body!

My daughter is going through IVF (skinny as a rail), but with everything she has to go through with this, I'd want her to go for the baby first. Like READY said, try and stick with a good diet, start using some of the tools like eating smaller bites, chewing more, drinking more Water and you'll be all set when the time is right.

Whatever you decide, I support you!!!

I would have to agree on having the baby first.

However, I got pregnant 4 months after being banded. We had to do IUI for each of our kids due to male issues.

Wow you are so lucky to have frozen embryos at your disposal. that means no stimulation meds for a stim cycle and you just have to do the second 1/2 of the IVF protocol wich is basically just like the embryo transfer that you did to have your other babies. As you are probally aware the higher the bmi the harder it is to properly dose meds at a safe level and for the treatment to be sucessful.

what does your reproductive RE say? are they comfortable with yor bmi where it is now? or would only a slight reduction in weight be benifitial? the band is for folks that have 100 pounds or more to loose.

I know what it must feel like when your biological clock is ticking (mine is screaming and i don't have kids yet and I need IVF to get pregnant (pcos+male factor). I would talk with your endocrinologist who helped you get pregnant last time and see what they have to say.

Often with Lapband surgery they really encourage you NOT to get pregnant for up to three years after band placement due to nutrtional defficiency tha tmight arise. But sometimes "band babies" just happen.

I've lost seventy two pounds since my banding and still no "accident". So who knows.(not preventing pregnancy at all...thank you pcos).

looks like we will be trying to look into embryo donation/adoption as I get closer to my goal weight.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
