Body Fat Calculation

Recommended Posts

In a weight conscious culture, a body fat percentage calculator is of utmost importance as both men and women alike want to look their best and be at their optimal weight. However although many traditional weight loss programs are excellent at assisting with losing weight and tracking body weight with a standard scale, they are not able to give as accurate a number as can be gotten from a body fat percentage calculator. Body conscious and health aware consumers now want more from their scale than a simple weight number. In order to track weight loss, health, and the efficiency of a workout regimen, it is also important to have a body fat percentage calculator. These tools can accurately reflect the amount of muscle to fat in each individual and can lend clarity as to what is working in an exercise routine and what may need to be changed. I think that it is a heck of a lot more then the number on the scale and the "body fat calculator".

Neither method account for skeletal size(small, med, or large frame) or how the fat is distributed wthin the body.

I'd go by the number on the scale, how your clothes are fitting, and by how toned your muscles are getting by monitoring how much weight you can lift and repts. ect. Sometimes the eyes and how our clothes fit can tell more about health then the scale or the body fat ratio method.

I don't understand how those scales can work out how much fat and how much muscle your body carries.

The problems with BMI is they are not always very good. Examaple, A 6 foot bodybuilder at 225pounds of solid muscle will indicate an obese condition for his height. Yet, visually very little fat can be seen.

BMI is just an indicator and a learning tool in controlling weight if you want to use it.

I was very lucky. The center where I had my pre-op program offered a body scan that showed how much lean muscle and how much fat you carried. I had one done pre-op and one done one year post- op. Pretty amazing information. Without the scan I would never have known that my "ideal" weight according to every height and weight chart was completely unrealistic for me.

I now have a real weight target...not just a chart target that my body was not designed to be.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
