Fluid In The Band At The Time Of Surgery

Recommended Posts

While reading some of the posts in the last few weeks I have read that some people are under the perception that doctors do not put any Fluid in the band at surgery. . I did ask this question at the hospital after surgery and was told by a nurse that they do not usually do that at the time of surgery. When I went for my first fill I found out that I already had 3cc in my band. They put in 2 more and I could not even sip Water so they took out I cc and now I have 4cc’s. I have had appointments twice for two more fills but I have canceled them due to the fact that I am still losing and have some difficulty in eating some foods. I did not know to ask the question of my doctor before surgery so I am hoping that all the new banders to be will remember this and ask the doctor doing the surgery and not the nurse after surgery

Good to know, I was banded on August 23rd and I do get hungry but fill up on very little. I'm not sure if my doc did a small fill at the time of surgery. I'm scheduled for my first fill September 25th, I will surely ask.

Yes, this is one of those things that every doctor is different. My doc did not put anything in my band when I had the surgery. He told me that, I did not ask before hand. I dont think I would have even have known to ask.

Its good for people to know this!

Yes my doctor added 2.2cc during surgery. I didn't know until my first fill this week. Honestly, Im glad he did add Fluid because it gave me time to learn what my "full" sensation is like before I started solid foods. My transition went very smoothly. Had .5cc added this week. My nurse did explain to me the reasons some patients have fluid added during surgery. Partially due to the original fit of the 10cc band which can differ person to person. Also during the barium swallow immediately after surgery, any leakage can be detected. Other reasons as well. Im feeling great and loving my band!

This is good to know, I got a picture of my band and a pic of the x-ray after the barium swallow. I think I must have some type of fill because very little keeps me going. This week I start the mushies, so glad to be able to have yogurt!! Yum, yum.

What was some of the reasons why they put it in at the operation? My was done 4-24-12 and still getting the run around about getting any fills, they told me that they don't like giving fills and if I'm lucky enough to be one of the few that does get a fill that it will only be half cc. So crazy I have to travel a little was to see my doctor just to be told this? Etrrrrrrrr I've got to find another doctor , yep it's a good thing he did put 2cc in during the operation or I would be running on empty,

That's a big red flag...they "don't like" giving fills for a reason. Maybe they're not properly trained in doing fills and just don't feel confident in what they're doing. And you certainly don't want to take a risk. In that case, if your surgeon can't do the fills, look into an office that has Nurse Practitioners doing the fills. My NP even has the band herself and that helps a lot because she personally understands. BTW...you're doing GREAT with your weight loss!!! 50lbs is awesome!!!

That's just weird....it's part of standard maintenance with the band and the only was to make it truly effective!!!!

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
