Sick Of Protein Shakes!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I had surgery on August 23rd and I'm on the liquid diet..I can't take the shakes anymore. I'm not very hungry so I'm drinking 2 shakes a day, sf Jello, popsicles, crystal light and Water. Can I drink broth instead of the shakes? I'm at the point that I'm gagging my shakes everytime I take them. Any suggestions!

Thanks,

Miriam

You still need to try and get your Protein in. Try the Isopure Fruit Drinks. I got mine at BBC and am hoping they help me survive post OP.

I got cravings for salt a couple of times, and was very thankful to have chicken broth to satisfy that craving. This is the time that you have to be kind and gentle with your stomach to heal.

You do need to get your required amount of Protein daily for proper nutrition...and I got very tired of the sweet shakes also. I just toughed it out, and looked forward to the mushy stage.

You may want to contact your surgeon for their possible additional instructions to help get you through this stage.

Best wishes...there is an end to this.

I have yet to try it but I remember my dietician talking about some sort of flavorless Protein Powder. I have my doubts about being flavorless/tasteless, but it may be worth a try mixing it with your favorite Crystal Light??

Protein is very important, not only to keep you full but in the healing process as well. So, Protein isn't optional. You have to have it, one way or another.

I would suggest trying other Protein shakes, there's tons on the market. I know I tried 4 or 5 different brands before I finally found one that didn't make me gag. I couldn't stand that weird smell and after taste most seemed to have. Finally, I found powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, and I absolutely love them. I'm now almost 8 months post op and still have an Unjury chocolate Splendor Protein shake for Breakfast every morning.

Thanks all, I'm going tomorrow to see if I can find another Protein Shakes. I think that will help me get over the "I hate the powder shake" hump!

I highly recommend Unjury chicken Soup flavor. It's a great break from all the typical shakes out here. Also have you tried nectar by Syntrax? They've got som fruitier flavors that are pretty good.

@ OTR- No, I was only given the choice of the shakes they sell at the Dr. I got chocolate and strawberry but they taste like powder with Water.

I highly recommend both of those brands they are top quality & they both offer sample packs. Also a really good one for the uber-finicky is Chike. Chike is a bit higher in calories because it is a high Protein Meal Replacement rather than a protien drink, their banana flavor tastes like banana pudding.< /p>

Now I'm from a different continent where we have a totally different view.

I was not required to drink Protein shakes post op. Soups were one of the recommended foods and to me they made a huge difference. They tasted like real food and were satisfying which sweet , Protein Shakes weren't.

I made lots of different veggie Soups and added herbs and spices to taste. I also added different types of Beans, lentils etc for extra Protein. All you have to do once the veggies are cooked are blend until liquid.

You do not have to focus on protein in the post op stages - there are other ways of doing it which are just as successful.

elcee..i agree with you here. i never had to make protein shakes a part of my daily intake, i could use them if i chose to. i mainly had soups... chicken broth, beef broth.. sometimes i made up a strong bonox broth.. lol. i put garlic seasoning salt on mine... sometimes used a small amount of salsa. mild. i used garlic as well... i love spicy foods and cant like sweet drinks or foods. ( only sometimes have a craving for jubes.. lol) I did use protein shakes though, just occasionally.

ive always had one in my cupboard and still use them after having a fill. i get vanilla... use Water, greek yoghurt, sometimes coffee, sometimes vanilla... it was/is really tasty. i always dressed my Protein Drinks up so the original taste was obscured. lol.

I hated the shakes post op, just two sweet. The Unjury chicken Soup was the best, I also liked nectuar's lemon tea. I got some of the plain powder and it doesn't chane the taste, but doe change the texture which is a little odd. I did great with the shakes per op, bug I could chug them. Now it takes me hours to get one down.

I never did Protein Shakes, I hated them. I had a flavorless powder and added it to applesauce, oatmeal or cream of wheat. I made Protein Jello using Liquid Protein and Isopure drinks.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
