Eating Too Fast - Clarification

Recommended Posts

Normally I eat pretty quickly and I have been watching the size of my bites when eating food and trying to slow down, but what is the reason for watching if you are eating too fast? Why do i need to watch the speed when I'm eating? Maybe this will be more understandable to me in the future as I get more fills, but I don't know if I need to be watching for something or what this is about? Can eating too fast stretch your pouch or something?

Eating too fast can cause food to get stuck. Also, it takes 20 minutes for your brain to know you are full. If you eat too fast, the brain doesn't get that message in time and you then over eat.

I've been practicing eating my meals no faster than 20mins even though I have not been banded yet (Sept). It's true, it takes the brain that long to feel satisfied.

once u get stuck, eat slower the next time, when u dont get stuck, u will realize the point of watching how fast you eat. I never thought it woudl make a difference and prior to my second fill, it didnt make much of a diff, but after the second one...ohhhh let me tell ya.

I have yet to have my first fill, so honestly the smaller bites, chewing A LOT, and eating slow hasn't been an issue. am working on it now so that I am prepared, but I will admit it is hard when there are no issues if you don't do it. I've been on mostly mushy foods too, so chewing is difficult to master when the foods you are eating don't require it much. I just know that I, for one, have NO desire to find out what stuck food or eating too fast and throwing up feels like. ;)

This part 1 of 4 parts was the absolute best explanation for why we should eat slow:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
