8 Days Post-Op, Gained About 5 Lbs, No Restriction, And Very Depressed

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I guess I just need to vent

I had my surgery a week ago from yesterday and everything went great!

Between the preop diet and a few days post op I lost 14 pounds. Believe me, it wasn't easy. I started working out 3 days after surgery (doc said I can start whenever I feel up to it, and I was feeling fantastic after surgery), drank lots of Water, and made sure to drink only low cal liquids as best as i could on my post-op liquid phase (even though my doc said I can have high caloric liquids if I was hungry, like a milkshake or something, I resisted)

Wednesday I stopped losing weight (despite trying VERY HARD to lose!)

Yesterday my doc said I can eat regular foods and, without restriction, things were difficult, especially since last night was a family gathering with lots of food.

Tonight I checked the scale and saw I was up 5 pounds from the 14 that I lost.

I'm so depressed and sad

Sort of feel like a failure too

Any words of advice? Has anyone ever been in such a situation?

I am 8 days post op today as well. I too had a small weight gain. I think it is all part of the healing process. Just keep your chin up and do what you are suppose to do and the weight will come off.

I had surgery yesterday and even though I've had nothing but 2oz of broth at a time, I'm up 5lbs. I reckon It's the iv fluids so I'm not worried about it. Feeling blessed and excited.

I have gained, lost, and gained since my surgery 10 days ago. This has definitely been a roller coaster week!

I would not worry about it, your body is going through a lot right now. I know it will be hard but try not to get discouraged these first couple weeks/months as you haven't had your fills yet so you probably will not feel restriction when you eat. Right after surgery was the most difficult time for me as I wanted to lose fast and I didn't feel the restriction until my 2rd fill (about 2 months after my surgery).

It does get easier, good luck! :D

I know most people don't want to, but the only way I managed to lose post op, but before I had restriction, was by counting calories and sticking to a cup or less of food per meal. Granted I still do even now, but back then it was much more crucial so I didn't accidentally over eat.

Also, keep in mind the first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not losing. I always recommend people put the scale away for the first month and just concentrate on good food choices and giving your body time to heal. You may feel good but your body still has lots of healing to do, so focus on Protein especially during this time.

Best wishes.

How did you eat only a cup of food without any restriction? wasn't it hard?

Also, when you say one cup of food, do you weigh 8 ounces? or do you just eat whatever can be physically pushed into a cup?

I'm so confused how can you eat regular foods already? It's only been a week right? Can you be healed in that amount of time. I have 4 stages to go through. Day 2-5 fuilds, 1.5 weeks of full liquids, 1 week puréed food, 1 week soft foods then solid foods. I would be very careful what your eating just for your sake. I mean they stitch the band to your stomach I can't image those stiches like the ones on te outside are completely healed. Just be careful.

I to be honest felt hunger for the first time today and am also to eat only 1/4 to 1/2 of food at a time.

It depends. If it's something like meat, I'll weigh it. If it's something I can actually measure in a cup, I will.

And yes, I did stick to a cup or less even without restriction. But, I concentrated on daily calories rather than just 3 meals a day. So if my calorie budget was 1000 calories, it would be spread out so I could eat every 2 hours, rather than just 3 meals a day. That was the only way I could make it without being starving but still stick to a cup of food and stay within my calories.

Every surgeon has different rules. Some get on solids fast, others take a while. I was on liquids for 3 weeks, mushie for 2 weeks, soft 2 weeks, THEN finally solids.

Every surgeon has their own idea what works so follow what your specific surgeon advises.

I met with my doctor one week post-op and he gave me the OK to eat whatever I could handle

If my doctor says I am ready for solids then I trust him- please don't try to give me medical advise. I know you mean well, but I have a doctor.

Thank you

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
