Internal Stitch Coming Out Of Incision?

Recommended Posts

Is this possible? On one of my small incisions I noticed something that, at first, I thought was the edge of a scab. However, upon inspection I am almost positive it's a stitch. I had no external stitches, just whatever was internal. Could that be what this is? Of course I am going to call the dr, I just wanted some thoughts from the wise people here.

Yes it's totally possible, in fact I have had that happen with two different surgeries, one being for the Lap Band.

It's really not a big deal. Normally they dissolve, but once in awhile one will work it's way up through the skin. I just tugged gently with tweezers and it came right out. If it won't slide out easily, just use nail clippers to clip it as close to the skin as you can get.

I joked with my husband that I was afraid to use Tweezer because I don't want to unravel my insides or have it just coming out like a multicolored scarf in a bad magic trick! LOL

That happened to me too. I thought it was a scab, pulled it and 2 inches of thread came out! ha. I freaked a little too.

The same thing happened to me after my hysterectomy. I didn't pull it, I just cut it as close to the skin as possible.

If you are able to remove it or clip it go for it provided the incision has healed/closed enough. I thought my incision was infected and it turned out I had part of them that didn't dissolve. My incision healed over it and it was inflamed and sore. The surgeon had to reopen the end of my port incision to remove it. It wasn't too fun. He said they tie a knot at the end and sometimes people's bodies don't dissolve it.

Thank you all for the responses, SO glad I am not alone. I was a bit freaked!!! I did call the dr today and the nurse just said to let it dissolve. That's nice and all for what is still INSIDE, but the piece poking out was driving me nuts. I ended up clipping it as close to the skin as possible. It's still there but a bit less annoying. Good to know my insides aren't going to unravel. LOL :P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
