Someone mentioned hydrocodone for after surgery. What, if anything, do they prescribe? I'm not into feeling pain if there is something to alleviate it. I have a stash of hydrocodone at home from dental work. My surgery is next week in Mexico, and I think you can pick up just about anything without a prescription. I'm just wondering what I will need.

You will not be able to swallow pills without crushing them for the first few weeks post op. My surgeon prescribed a liquid form of hydrocodone prior to my surgery.

I had all of my prescriptions that came in a different form changed to either liquid or chewable form. The rest had to be crushed...and no matter what I did, I was unsuccessful with disguising the horrible bitter taste of the pills.

Lordy be careful crushing any pain pills without physician supervision!!! They can get into the blood too fast and cause major complications!!

I spoke to my office b/c I have issues with most pain meds. I asked for something like Ativan to take the edge off instead. My CRNP thinks liquid Tylenol would be more than sufficient post-op.

I am not into feeling pain either, but allergic to opiates and Ultram makes me itch like fire ants are crawling on me. I think I will take the pain as much as possible!

Be careful about picking up drugs in Mexico. Sure you can get just about anything without a prescription, but you will be in trouble with US Customs without the script. Should you be caught, the last thing you want is a hassle by Customs when you are newly post-op. Just have your doctor in Mexico write you up a prescription for the liquid form of Lortab/Vicodin like Sojourner mentioned. It's OK too if you have a US doctor's prescription.

I live near the Mexican border and would never take a painkiller across without a prescription.

Best of luck to you.

I had my script from my doc here in the states and it was in pill form. I did not have to crush it and had no problems swallowing it at all. I only was on it for a day though and then took tylenol in pill form for pain.

Be careful and good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
