Just Met With The Dr.

Recommended Posts

So I just had my first meeting with the Dr. He said his only concern is that if I have a slow metabolism, the band may not be able to lose because the band allows 1200-1500 calories a day and it may not be low enough to get my body to lose weight. Anyone out there have a slow metabolism and had the band surgery? I also have hypothyroidism and on meds for that.

"The band allows 1200-1500 calories a day" is not a true statement. The band would allow 100 calories or 5,000. It's up to you and what you put in your mouth. The band is simply a tool to help you feel fuller, faster. The goal is to be satisfied for 4-6 hours on 1 cup of food (trust me, I still have moments where I'd like that 1 cup to be all Sour patch Kids or a Snickers). The surgery has to be accompanied with a lifestyle change that includes healthy food and exercise. If this sounds like something you're up for then the band may be right for you.

I also have hypothyroid and don't think it's an issue so much...I take a supplement daily to help keep my levels in range. You may need to adjust your meds as you lose.

Ok, so you have a slow metabolism, and the band may not help you lose (I'm not sure I believe this BTW, because it depends on what you choose to eat). BUT at least the band will assist you in not GAINING!

Thats a success too, in my humble opinion (given your metabolic situation)

I'm Sure the doc just wanted me to have all the info. He did say patients on the lap band dont regain any weight, which is a big plus to getting surgery.

Oh are you going to hear from a lot of banders about " Dr said lap banders don't regain their weight".

Why? Is that not true? If you started to regain couldn't you get it filled?

Hahahahahahaha that is so not true I may hurt myself laughing. As a start, I think you might want to look at another surgeon, this one seems ill-informed to put it nicely. Yes you can regainebrything you lost, if you lose. Browse the posts here, there are numerous "I've been banded and gained wight" or "the bad has failed me" topics.

Good luck!!!

Every time I see a post like this I think of the plastic surgeon who has a $2 mil mortgage and a $100K Porsche payment he needs to make. I may be guilty of hyperbole but a bypass or sleeve is about 2.5 X more expensive and the fee to the surgeon is also much higher.

Or like Christie said, he's ill informed. Make sure you vet your surgeon very carefully. There are some who get into this line of work who may not have the patients best interests at heart.

I think you need to see another doctor.........this one seems very misinformed.......you can get more accurate info on google than you have with him.

Melissa, please don't take to heart the way that people have posted in reply to your question. They are bandsters with more experience and they are simply trying to guide you away from a surgeon who seems to be misinformed and therefore misinforming you in the process. You will have more success with a knowledgeable and experienced band surgeon. You will also get plenty of support on here so keep asking your questions.

Best wishes.

I agree with everything that 2muchfun has said.

Many doctors will try to sway patients towards the sleeve/bypass because the real moneymaker is in the operating room and not the follow ups/ fills (which is about half what a lapband surgeon spends time with). btw, my surgeon himself told me this

this makes me realize not put it past doctors to falsely give their patients rose colored glasses of promises and blanket statements that they'll "never regain the weight back." Please don't let him misinform you

Good luck, and please ask more questions on here. You will get answers from real patients at various points in the process

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
