Pre-Op Appointments

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new in the process. I had my first consult with my surgeon July 27th. Then did my upper GI test and bloodwork August 3rd and met with my primary care to follow up with that. Now my first nutrition appt is Monday with my pulmonary and psychology appts the next week and a follow up at the surgeons office Sept 11th.

What is the typical time frame from the initial surgical consult to surgery date? I don't have a "waiting period" with my insurance. Also I'd like to get some other perspectives on pre-op appts and what other people's requirements were!

I had a waiting period because of Insurance. If wasn't for that I think month 3 would have been the surgery. I had my consult Oct 12 along with Nutritionist and then all the other tests and clearance by PCP in November day after Thanksgiving. So I suspect given my Surgeon's schedule the surgery would have been early to mid December. A lot of it depends on how booked your Surgeon might be.

Should depend on your physician's schedule and pre-op diet requirements? There is no regular or normal about how each doctor plans these operations. Each one will be different. Mine had no pre op diet and got me in to surgery 3 weeks after I got the insurance go ahead.

Wow that's quick. When I asked for a time frame the nurse at the surgeons said around 4 months...taking me into November for surgery. Crossing my fingers all goes smoothly now!

I had...

3 Nutrition classes (general, pre-op diet, and post-op diet)

Psych

EDG where they found the hiatal

no history of refulux so no need for the upper gi

I got hooked up with my doc when he took my gallbladder out so nothing to look at there either

sleep study

I have my pre-admission labs, final 6 month weigh in and a final consult with doc left

I think other's are right that it def depends on your doc's schedule. When he takes your history and decides what he wants included in the work up for you a lot could be determined by how fast you could get it all done. If you have an open schedule it will move a lot faster.

If they are thinking four months now... I would ask to schedule a date for surgery on your first visit. Especially if you risk getting around the holidays. It might give you incentive to push thru everything else.

Wow I didn't think this process will take so long :( I just did my sleep study. Now Blood work and see my nutritionist on the 17th. Thank God my insurance didn't require the 6 month diet. Want it done fast but still scared.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
