chubsy 1 Posted August 18, 2012 An anyone tell me if they had to have their hearnia repaired at time if lapband surgery. I have a large one and would like to know if it is a problem and how is the post op? Will the healing take much longer then usual?
Rojasanoll 920 Posted August 18, 2012 I had mine repaired under the braestbone area. Probably more discomfort and aches than the band surgery. But now I have no gas and problems. Mine was large about size of a nickel and nothing worked until surgeon sewed it shut. I do have 2 additional incisions, one on each side of chest for the hernia fix. For me it only bothered me over night and the pain meds took care of all pain/aches. Pain was probably a 1, on a scale 1 to 5.
RobinGirl 34 Posted August 18, 2012 I had mine repaired during the lap band surgery. I didn't notice any issues, but I wouldn't know the difference. I'm super happy now, with no more reflux!!! 1 SinCityGal reacted to this
The Laughing Cat 54 Posted August 18, 2012 My hiatal hernia was repaired at the time of my lap band operation. I have seven incision sites instead of the usual 3-5. My pain and recovery were certainly within the limits of normal and actually not as bad as I expected. Best of luck to you
jen_1381 446 Posted August 18, 2012 I didn't even know I had a hiatial hernia until after surgery. My surgeon said about 50% of his cases have hernias and don't know it. Made sense; I had horrid heartburn no matter what I took. I had uncontrolled Migraines for about 3 years and threw up a LOT, the surgeon said I most likely caused it during a vomiting episode. I didn't notice any additional discomfort, but having them both done at the same time I wouldn't know which pain was which. I only had the regular 5 incisions for the band placement. Almost 3 months post-op, I haven't had heartburn once. It's AMAZING! 2 ☠carolinagirl☠ and RobinGirl reacted to this
chubsy 1 Posted August 18, 2012 Thank you all for replying, it definetely gives me comfort knowing this will not impact the lapband surgery. While some people live with no symptoms of HH i had plenty of issues and everyone told me that surgical repair will not do anything as it just comes back. Do you know if this is something that insurance meeds to approve additionally or its part of the lapband procedure? Once again thank you all for your responses
TampaGina 11 Posted August 18, 2012 I am 5 days post op and my doctor found the hernia while he was doing the surgery and fixed it. I can't imagine that has to be run by insurance before hand, especially since...like in my case, we didn't even know about it! I, also, am not sure if the pain is coming from that or the port because all the discomfort seems to be in the same place. I have been taking 800mg of cimitidene for reflux/heartburn...I wonder if that is something I could stop taking now?
SibleyNP 12 Posted August 18, 2012 Had to have mine fixed otherwise the band would not fit. Its great having it fixed, no more Prilosec. Yeah!!

AndiUK 0 Posted August 18, 2012 Hi everyone, I had my gastric band surgery done 2 days ago, on 16th August 2012 in Derby, UK. My surgeon found that I, too, had a hiatus hernia that we did not know about and he had to repair it for the band to work. I have had recurring reflux problems on and off the last 2 years, struggled breathing sometimes and wake up choking in the night, so I am really relieved that it was found and repaired. I came home yesterday and am a little uncomfortable, but not in a lot of pain, more discomfort in the 5 incision areas and the areas where gas is trapped. I am getting rid of it, but it seems to come back as soon as you get rid of it. Walking has helped some. I have tried peppermint tea, but not sure as to whether that is helping or not. I am more worried about not having had a BM yet! Any suggestions?? I was running a low-grade fever, but got it back to normal with paracetamol. The injections I have to give myself daily for 7 days to reduce the risk of a blood clot are horrible, they make me feel sick and really bruise my stomach. I am a bit swollen at the moment and on day 2 of my liquid diet. I remember the old days of Slimfast--it doesn't seem to be so bad now! Any hints, tips, advice for a newbie like me who is experiencing every emotion and feeling would be appreciated! Thanks, Andi
