1St Day Of Pre Op Diet And Question About Sils

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was my pre-op appointment and today I started my pre-op diet (surgery is Sept 4). Since I have gained 13 lbs since my initial appointment, my pre-op diet is 4 shakes a day (Bariatric Advantage). I get a shake for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I will have another one before bed. However, I just slipped and had 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese :( Sigh. I feel so discouraged. Like if I can't even do one day, how am I going to make it until surgery (and after!) Any advice or support is appreciated!

Another question though, anyone here have the single incision procedure? Were you pleased with it? My surgeon says this is an option for me but that I really have to shrink my liver as much as possible before surgery (hence the super restrictive pre-op diet!)

I agree with you, if you can't make it on day 1 of the pre requirements, you really need to take a long hard look at how you are going to change your habits for post band life. The band is not going to stop you from eating chocolate, chips, cake, sweets etc, because those are easy foods to eat with the band. You will need to be diligent to eat your 70g of protien, veggies, fruits at every meal and stop when you feel satisfied. i am sure that like me you have read stories how people were taken into surgery and woke up without having the procedure because of the fatty liver.

I don't have advice as I am 2 weeks behind you, but just think of the end result, drink lots, get some sugar free popsicles, not sure if you can have fruit or veggies, but enjoy them if you can, go for a walk. I understand that the first 3 days are the hardest, so.........pull up those big girl panties, and tomorrow is a new day, start over and keep your eye on the prize.

Having said all that, you might even see me here in 2 weeks with an identical post to yours......have a nutrition consult yesterday, and I am most freaked out by the 2 week on optifree, but will take it one day at time.

Have a great day tomorrow.

The pre op diet is so hard! I'm not gonna lie...in the 16 days that I was on it, I probably cheated 5 days.

I was told that we have to realize that we got this way because of cheating...so the doctors know we are going to cheat here and there...just get right back on it!

Take a deep breath! I doubt that little bit of cottage cheese is going to derail you! It could have been a snickers bar! It happened and you are sorry about it, and just move on. If this were easy none of us would be fat in the first place! Good luck and keep up the good work!

Pre op was a dream compared to the actually surgery. You've gotta be in the right mindset. Once that band is in place, it's all up to you. I've seen people have the band, eat what they want, which causes getting 'stuck' and then they blame the band. I'm only 2 days post-op and I feel like a new person from the inside...and eventually out:) its been a slow recovery thus far but I se the whole picture. Cheating ain't worth it. Good luck to you:)

My surgeon has done more lapbands than any other in the state. He said he has yet to meet a liver he couldn't work around. He has some patients who did NO pre-op diet, but were fine. When I put in for my time off at work for the surgery, they fired me. 4.5 years I've worked there and I've been with the company since the beginning. It's been a challenging pre-op emotionally to say the least. I've done the best I could and just stuck to a low-carb diet with 1 or 2 shakes a day. 12 people will give you 12 different answers. Good luck!

I'm also being band on Sept 4. I have start my pre-op but so far so good. It's not easy but you can do it. To me is a mind thing you have to be mentally and physically ready for your new life style. If you fall off the band wagon don't give up just dust yourself off and get back on. Tomorrow's a new day !! :)

If it helps... the 1/2 cup of cottage cheese IS an option on my pre-op diet.

Clearly you shoud try to not cheat, but I agree that it could have been A LOT worse.

Some people have no pre-op ... some people have highly restrictive plans... Just fo your very best. I am working towards my pre-op already because I don't wanna walk into a wall when Sept 12th rolls up.

Remember the feeling you had after you gave in, remember your personal disappointment... Keep that and use it next time you want a snack. 4 shakes a day will get boring, at some point you will just have to drink your drink and get over it.. Get over the fact that your hungry..make hunger and cravings your friend or enemy what ever works better.

Wisdom the prep op Protein Shakes are hard if thats all you're allowed. I had to do a whole month of them but was allowed two cups if steamed vegetables a day. I was bad some days and had some chicken with my vegetables for dinner instead of the shake and I still managed to loose over twenty pounds in that time. Please don't be discouraged, just get back on track and if you feel you need to eat food then it's best to contact your surgeon and Ask which foods would be better for you to consume. I had doubts if I couldn't stick to the pre op diet how was I going to go after being banded. I'm now seven weeks post op and over 50 pounds down and doing just fine and you will too. Best of luck to you!

Yes the pre-op diet is hard, but you can make it. You "cheated" with cottage cheese, not a whole pizza pie. I had a few moments during the pre-op diet, but after the surgery, you will be able to follow the diet with no problem. Best of luck to you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
