5 Days Post Op Chest Tightness?? Is This Normal?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Need a little advice! I'm 5 days post op and up until this morning wasn't feeling too bad. Back to normal duties during the day without too much discomfort. Apart from being a bit over liquids seem to be travelling well.

This morning however I have woken feeling very lithargic and light headed with what feels like a tightness in my chest. Is this normal? I feel like I have to sit and concentrate on taking deep breaths? I'm a little worried, has anyone else experienced this?

Even though you feel better, your body is still very much in the healing process internally. People don't realize the amount of energy your body needs to recover from surgery, and that's exactly why for weeks afterward you can expect to feel more tired than usual and much more easily wore out.

Your lethargy and light headedness today is a perfect example of this. You're still very early in the healing process.

The chest pains sound like gas pains, because they pump gas into your abdominal cavity during surgery. It can take awhile for it ease up. Because it's not in your digestive system, it's actually in your abdominal cavity, it takes time for your body to reabsorb it. Chest pain, shoulder pain, even back pain is common.

Be gentle with yourself and patient, you're healing :)

perhaps you could have a glucose drink? or a lozenge? it could be a touch of hypo insulinism.

I'm only 2 days out and have slightly similar symptoms. But not bad enough to make me nervous. I agree with the others it's gas. I just took a gasX melt away and had a bunch of gas work out easily. My back is hurting a lot today, but probably because I'm walking different and babying my right side. (port) hoping that will pass:) good luck to u!!!

It's a brand Gas-X

They come in chewable, and now strips that melt in ur mouth, which is great for banders. Some say this medicine works, some don't think so. It did work for pretty well. Good luck!

Day 4-5 was worse for me in terms of gas pains. It does take awhile to go away and that pain (which was the worst) could not be helped by anything. It lessens, though I still have it occasionally and I'm 3.5 weeks post-op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
