Pain Where The Port Is, Not In The Incision Area

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days post op. I have had a lot of pain/swelling/tenderness around the large incision for the port. Normal, expected, not a big deal. However, just now I was sorta holding my side and one spot was VERY sore and sensitive to touch/pressure. I know it's where the port is (I can feel it plus the nurse showed me). Is it normal for it to be sore to the touch? I am not sure if I just never really put pressure on it before now to not have noticed.

I am also 10 days post surgery and today was the first day that I did not have pain around the port area. Mine was also sore to the touch until today. I originally thought it was the incision that was hurting

Maybe the pain from my incision has kept me from realizing the port area itself hurts. I have the large incision, then a smaller one to the left and then the actual port to the left of it. The pain today is definitely the port.

The port is attached to a muscle so it is possible that the muscle underneath is a little tender. Also if you have over exerted yourself or moved strangely you can pull it and cause it to hurt. The best thing to do though is phone your Dr. Just to make sure that what you are experiencing is normal.

yep... its normal. Even months out from surgery sometimes i might get a sore spot around the port. it goes away again and i dont take any notice of it. Being stitched into muscle means its going to take a while to heal..... just take it easy.

Yeah the 1st month my port was crazy sore. I am 3 months out now and it still hurts sometimes.

I actually had to call my dr's office to speak to them about my FMLA paperwork, so I talked to the nurse about the pain. She said it's probably just because I am doing more now and even just turning the wrong way can pull on the muscle that the port is attached to and cause the pain. I think I'm just going to worry over everything until I get more used to it all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
