I don't know. My dr told me no soda at all. I drink one per day for the caffiene. No problems as of yet

No one can really say for sure. I'm sure many will say it's no big deal. However, you couldn't pay me to touch carbonation since being banded. My roommate after band surgery was in there for a revision. Her band had not only slipped but her stomach actually prolapsed up through her band- because she drank soda. She also gained 40 lbs because of it.

For me, it's simply not worth the risk.

Doctors tend to be very different on this topic.

Mine wouldn't do the surgery unless I promised (and signed his "health contract") to not drink carbonated beverages. Wasn't an issue for me since I quit soda over a year before surgery, but for some people it is a big deal.

I would check with your doc or nutritionist.

I had to sign that same thing Jen.

For me it is about what is more important to me the taste of that soda or the health and longevity of my band and pouch. If I drank beer like I drank soda preop I would be a serious alcoholic and I tell you it just isn't worth it. You work so hard to get approval and to actually get the surgery. Why risk it even if it were minimal?

Yea you all are right. I quit sodas a month before. I had a sip and made me burp. I just saw a pic of cream soda. It looked good! I have only drank protien shakes, milk, and Water for 4 months.

My doc has no problem with it (although he warns of bad belching reactions), but he seems to be in the minority.

I have practically completely cut soda's out of my diet now anyhow so it's irrelevant to me

Is it totally bad if I have a few sips once a month?

My Dr forbids it. That said... I asked why... since Diet Coke and I had a very special relationship. ;) He told me that its the carbonation. When you drink it your stomach expands because it passes thru the pouch. When it moves on... the stomach contracts. If you do this numerous times a day...your band is at a bigger risk to move and break away from the stitches causing possible slipage.

That said... In the 21 months since being banded I confess I have craved a DC a few times... so I opened one up...let it sit for 20 minutes then sipped very slowly. And to be honest... I didnt much care for it so really can take it or leave it now.

Like another poster here, my doctor said it was okay to drink carbonation so I do. Haven't had any troubles. I'd talk to your dr and ease into it if you want.

My Dr had no problem with soda but did suggest pouring it out into a glass and letting it sit for 15 mins then add ice if needed. But he did say the gas could stretch the pouch out so you could eat more so be careful with that. You should ask your dr, everyone is different.

Glad to hear my doc isn't the only one

Was beginning to feel a little lonely ;)

I do have sips from my husband now and again and I do drink root beer or sprite on occasion. But for the most part I dont. I cant eat and drink soda cause the carbonation swells my pouch and it hurts until I burp it out. I think I may have 6 oz a month if that. Never a full drink by my self.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
