Walking/jogging

Good Morning From Texas!!

I had been walking about 12 miles a week over the last several months and decided the start putting in short intervals of joggin in as well. On the forum I ran across Couch to 5k downloaded the app and began on Monday! WOW! It was much harder than I thought it would be however I completed W1D1. GO ME! W1D2 was yesterday and I find myself so completely exhausted today. Has anyone else experienced it? Ive never been a runner but I am going to give it my best shot to complete the entire program.

Any other advice anyone can give me besides just to take things slow?

check out the U-Tube videos from newtoyforkatie she ahd some of her friends did it and she talks about it alot. I have enjoyed her utube blog.

I'm not following the C25K program (I've heard it's GREAT though). I started out just walking outside or on the treadmill. Then I went to walking 1 minute jogging 1 minute. After a while I noticed I wasn't feeling like I was going to die after 1 minute, and kept on for two then back to walking. I try to mix about half and half now, with my goal to be able to jog completely for a half hour. It's MUCH harder on the treadmill for me vs outside, but it's getting easier.

Believe me if anyone ever told me that I would ever give a split second thought to running I would have called them a liar....! :) Its pretty amazing what you can do you sent your mind to it!

When I get passed the joggin for 1 min and feeling like Im gonna die I will let you know! :P

Its called Couch to 5k and yes its available on android Im using it on my HTC Evo.

I finished Week1 day3 yesterday and surprisely I didnt feel like I was about to die! haha!

I just may turn into a runner yet!

If you had asked me a year ago if I was a runner, I would have told you "Not unless something big is chasing me". After being banded and learning to eat right and exercize, I am now going to run a half marathon in September. That's right, after losing 75 pounds I can run!! I ran a 10K in April and have been training for the half marathon ever since. I cant wait. I amazed even myself the other day on the treadmill. I ran an entire hour without stopping!!! Amazing!

Keep up the good work. It gets easier with every pound you lose! Keep at it!

I've kind of wanted to start jogging. I have not tried C25K but I've done it by jogging in intervals. Unfortunately I don't think it's really good for me. I've been having problems with my knees (more so my right) and I've found that jogging on the pavement makes my knees hurt more. :( I did do warrior dash last month and I enjoyed it and had no real problems jogging on the dirt. So maybe I need to find a dirt trail somewhere I can jog on.

Wow that is great!!! I would love to do that. How did you start training and everything? Do you have a trainer?

I am on week 3 of the C25K. I found week one the most difficult so far. I only do it 3 days per week, hot yoga/pilates 4-5 days a week. I found that it was easier by having a recovery for the cardio in between.

The only tips I have are what I have heard from others doing the program.

Don't worry if you have to repeat a day or a week, in the end it all works out anyways and secondly, don't go for speed so much. A slow jog is great as you can up the speed once you can run continuously.

It is quite a good program.

You can so do it! Every day is progress.

I agree with some of the comments on the idea of running. I've never liked running myself, and couldn't think that I would ever get to the point that I looked forward to it. I was banded in Feb 2010. I started out running 1/2 mile at a time, and would build up every week to then a mile, then a mile and a half.......... My weight started out at 301, and my running started when I was in the high 240s. I eventually ran in the Donor Dash in July of that year which is a 5k. Saturday night I told my wife, "I’m going to do it." I ran it in about 42 minutes. I didn't stop.

I was proud for getting to that point, and looked forward to running in the mornings. The following week I ran 5 miles at one time. I bottomed out that day as I have sugar diabetes. The doctor dropped my meds even more which gave me more incentive to run..

Then a couple weeks later I did 6.4 which was equivalent to a 10k. That took me 1.5 hours. I never got so winded I couldn't continue. As I was running I was thinking I would have been watching something silly on TV like Dog The Bounty Hunter, or Billy The Exterminator. I was thinking how many years of my life has been spent in front of a TV instead of exercising.

Then in November of that year, I fell of the latter in my garage and broke my leg. I couldn't run for 9 months, and the doctors have advised me to try swimming or biking. I don't get the same cardio feeling as I do when I run. Then I had a slip of my band and got back up to 282. I had the h-pylori, so that treatment took some time. Now I'm back on track. My weight is around 265, and I finally got in 3.2 miles 2 times this week. Now by no means am I worried about time. It took around 47+ minutes the first time, and I was 46+ the 2nd time. One of my elderly neighbors can walk as fast as my jog :) . I'd like to run the 5k for the Denver Komen walk in October. My mom and 4 sisters have all survived breast cancer, so our family tries to participate as many as we can each year.

I can tell my heavier weight is effecting my knees. I recommend anyone who wants to run for exercise to buy a good pair of shoes. Just like a read in another post about bikes, running shoes from Target/Wal-Mart don't work for me. I'm 47, and would like to get down in the area of 200-210. I think it would be great if I could do a triathlon before 50. I've learned I can reach anything I put my mind to. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd do a 5k.

What I'd like you to take away from my story is that anything is achievable. Even if it's something you've never imagined you'd like. Have a plan, work it, and do your best. Things will always work out. Good luck!!!

QUESTION: what do you do about the jiggle in the middle? I tried running tights, but they make my stomach hurt and I always wear a tight under shirt but I can't stand the feeling of my tummy jiggling. I prefer the eliptical but I do want to be able to run.

I was just like you! The first time I ran earlier this year I barely made it 2 houses down my street. I have now run 2 5k's. I always walk in the mornings during the week but last Saturday before work I ran 2 miles at 6 am and was actually looking fwd to it. Yep, I now call myself a runner! And that to me blows my mind as well!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
