A New New Dawn 1,695 Posted August 12, 2012 Do you know what carrier? I have BCBS of IL and the approval process was a breeze. However, for me, my BMI and 2 comorbities "helped" me get approved very easily. Definitely ask if they cover weight loss surgery and what are the requirements to get approved. When I called they also sent me all the information they provided over the phone by mail so I could look at in greater detail. The form they sent actually was a bit more detailed and said I had to document my diet, etc. Do you have a surgeon or practice you are working with? They typically are very familiar with the actual requirements of the various insurance carriers and give you direction too. They will say you still need to call insurance to be sure but they should know for the most part since they are doing hundreds of these. Good luck. 2 Lori Voss Green and Maddysgram reacted to this
venessa 1 Posted August 13, 2012 I haven't even got to the part that I meet the surgeons. I want to get the insurance info together ( I'm waiting for my husbands work to get the info together ) . I don't want to get my heart broken like I tried with my old insurance to only find out my employer excluded any weight loss procedures . Do you recommend any surgeons ? Lori Voss Green 93 Posted August 15, 2012 I have AND work for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. You'll want to ask first off if your policy covers the surgery. If it does, you'll need to know what criteria needs to be met to be approved. I'd also ask if you have to use certain doctors/facilities. Check for any pre-existing waiting periods as well. I would just call the customer service # and let them know you are interested in learning what your benefits are for the surgery, what you have to do to get approved, etc.
