Help Really Bad Gas

Recommended Posts

So I am exactly one week post-op today and everything is starting to feel fine finally except the gas! I will admit that I probably didn't get up and move around as much as I should have the first two days and I never took any of the pain meds (never felt I needed them). Unfortunately, now one week out I have these almost debilitating moments after walking a little while where the gas is so bad that I can't stand up straight. Has anyone else had anything similar? I have started taking gas-x after meals but it doesn't make cuz this happens right after meals, in between meals, whenever.

I had pretty bad gas pains after surgery too! It's pretty common and normal.. Try to Move around as much as you can.. That's your best best to get relief.. And keep taking the gas x.. Try switching up the times you take it.

When I was first banded, I Found that if I ate too much I would feel a pain in my chest that would run to my arm.. Pretty bizarre!

Good luck to you!

Banded 7/5/2012 :)

The gas x isn't going to help you, you need to take the painkillers that your Dr prescribed (they do that for a reason you know). The gas is not in your digestive system, it is residual gas that was pumped into your body cavity to give the Dr more space to work. I know this article is about gallbladder but the same is true for lapband.

I had really bad has too. Walking & a heating pad were the only things that helped me. The heating pad was a lifesaver.

(1 wk post op )Did you get a spirometer? If so, use it helps with the gas. I know this may sound funny but I used it and can hear a funny sound as I exhaled. I started with shoulder pain a started doing the spirometer and felt better in less then an hour. ...But that just me, everyone is different.

No didn't get one after this procedure, but I used to have one that must have gotten lost during our move last year.

I'm going to take the pain meds tonight and we will see how I feel on the morning.

Ok good luck I hope you feel better. If you find It I think it would help. They gave me one at the hospital and the nurse said to raise and rotate your arm. Please keep us updated on your progress. :)

It's not gas pain, as elcee has also mentioned. The gas they pump into you is absorbed and got rid of in the first few days. It's referred pain from your diaphragm. I'm nearly seven weeks post op and I will get the pain if I've eaten too quickly or too much. Also walking and heating pads I find relieves it for me. Try slowing your eating down even more if you can and maybe get up and walk around a bit between bites. I wish you luck and hope those pains don't hand around too long, they certainly are not nice.

I had lingering gas pain in my shoulder for about 10 days after. I think we are a bit susceptible to digestive gas right after surgery since everything is swollen and a little gas feels like a lot. I also think that high Protein foods (protein drinks) can cause added gas. I chewed a lot of gas -x, walked, and used a therapeutic shoulder shrug (you can put it in the microwave or the freezer). I also wear a CPAP at night and I think that helped too.

Thanks for all the good ideas. Woke up this morning feeling a lot better after taking pain meds last night. Definitely trying to move around a lot more and I'm feeling the difference today.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
