Questions About Being Stuck!

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill Monday and I'm so nervous to eat. I'm afraid of getting stuck and not knowing what to expect is a little scary. I've read on here that if you do get stuck you can drink pineapple juice or take papaya or mango to help allieviate the pain.

If any of this is wrong or more information is out there please share, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Your statements are true. The enzymes in the juice or pills can help break down the food. Many people swear by them. I've tried juice, no help for me. Papaya enzymes I've tried a couple of times, they are about 50/50 for me. But the reaction was not immediate, so it might have been coincidental.

Don't be afraid to eat, but do take small bites and chew very well. Stop eating at the first sign of any pain and give it a few minutes to subside. If you keep eating, you are dooming yourself to more pain.

Learning how and what to eat after a fill is part of the process. This is how you find out what foods your band is going to like or dislike. Getting stuck is no big deal 99% of the time. It just means that you ate too fast, ate too much, didn't chew and so on. It usually passes through the band in 5-20 minutes and then you just don't eat that way again for a while. It's usually not painful, maybe a little discomfort, and some icky slime may come up.

For some of us, it's a good sign that we're getting close to our green zone. It usually means that we're getting some restriction but that we also need to eat the band way. It's a constant reminder that we need to slow down and eat small. So don't stop eating, it's the only way you're going to learn how to live alongside your band. And if you do have a stuck episode, do a happy dance because you're getting some restriction.

I would be really hesitant to add liquids on top of getting stuck, regardless of if it's pineapple juice or not. If I try to do liquids when I'm stuck, it's 10 times worse.

i found the pineapple juice didnt work for me.... i was too sore to tolerate the juice and threw it back up again.... but thats not to say it wont work for you.

i would imagine by now you are a few days out from the fill. What have you been able to eat?? the usual procedure is to just have fluids the first 24 hours then gradually progress from that. i find that i have to wait a lot longer than a few days.. but everyone is different. if you just take it easy with fluids for now you will find that it wont be long and you will be eating normally. With solids, start out with softer foods.

To help pass food when stuck, my dietician actually recommended 1 tsp of meat tenderizer and 2 oz of Water. I'm not banded yet but she has been spot on and the surgeon she works with is top notch so I trust her.

Today while I was getting my second fill I asked my doctor this question as a few times I've had some things get stuck. I've just drunk Water and walked around and after about ten mins the stuck food went through, first time was with broccoli the second time it was with red meat. My doctor said to drink coke as the bubbles will make you burp and that should help shift the stuck food. Haven't had to try coke yet but next time if I get stuck I'll give it a go.

Just remember to chew chew chew and as some if the others said don't be scared to eat, its going to be trial and error with some foods. Some people can eat red meats some can't. We are all different and it's a learning process as to what things get stuck and what don't. I'm happy to give up red meat as I was never a fan of it anyway.

You'll be fine just chew chew chew and then chew chew chew, lol. Some times I feel like a cow I'm chewing so much. Best wishes!

meat tenderizer has the same enzymes as papaya extract, it breaks down the food, but can be quite salty. If I drink 3-4 oz of Water, I will bring the Water and offending food up. it isn't a retching vomit, just an urp and out. Quite effective, actually. Sipping the pineapple juice didn't do this to me, as it was just tiny amounts, but the point of drinking when stuck is well taken.

Stuck is painful for me. Like I have a rock just below my sternum that I should not have swallowed. Walking, walking, walking does help with the pain. As does making odd faces, for some reason.

My hubby can spot when I am stuck before I can sometimes, just by my expression as I evaluate.

Got stuck for the first time today and it was horrible, I didn't know what to do I think I even paniced a little. Felt like I wanted to throw up but I couldn't , felt like I was able to swollow but I couldn't. It was a bad experiance and I never want it to happen again. For now on when I'm done eating my jaws will be sore.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
