Im 4 weeks post op and have lots about 17 pounds and im stuck there. However, I've been getting really hungry the past few days, im not due for my adjustment until 2 more weeks. My concern is that I don't feel any restriction what so ever when I eat. I have been eating soft foods mainly in small quantities but Im afraid my band slipped since is am not getting as full as before or feel any restriction. I do get the feeling of fullness eventually and I stop eating. I haven't had no abdominal pain or any other problems, only mild heartburn occasionaly. Is this normal? How can I know my band is ok??

  • If you haven't had a fill, you won't feel any restriction. Even after a few fills you may not. You most likely felt some restriction for the first week or two post-op because of swelling.
  • Plateaus are completely normal (I have to keep reminding myself this!!) especially after such a durastic adjustment in your diet. Your body goes into conservation mode and also can adapt to your new eating style and exercise routine.
  • From what I hear, if you have a band slippage you KNOW it. There is pain, and an intolerance to food and liquids.

My best advice is stick to your eating plan, measure and weigh everything you eat, and log all of your food. Stick to the plan, and eventually your body will realize it can start letting go of some of the weight. The first month or so is all about healing not losing (which is frustrating since you are so excited for your new band and want the weight to just fall off!! That was my hope anyways...)

If you're really concerned about your band, it never hurts to call your surgeons office. Better safe than sorry.

You won't get restriction until you get fills. In fact took me 6 months! Also the band is really meant to work with solid foods. At four weeks are you on solids yet?

I did 3 days Clear Liquids then full liquid up to 2 wks post op, then mushies, and the past week I've been doing soft foods I should be introducing solids slowly up to week 6. I have been doing Protein Shakes also I noticed that if I dont take them am hungrier than when I take them.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
