If you drink with your meal you are just flushing the food through the band and you will not get the feeling of fullness and this tool, the lap band, will not benefit you if you don't follow all the instructions. Don't get me wrong, I will stare at the clock for 30 minutes some days, somedays I go for a 30 minute walk then grab a cold drink. Or get on a computer and play a solitaire game, do some research, email a friend....right in your blog for 30 minutes.

This topic comes up often. You're fairly new to this so give it time. I think many of us struggled with this dilemma in the beginning but as time passes and you learn to communicate with your band, you learn how to drink before you eat and come to accept the fact we can't guzzle fluids when we eat.

I assume you understand why we can't drink and eat? It's fairly simple, it's believed that a full pouch triggers the vagus nerve to send a message to the brain that we have eaten enough. Passing fluids through the pouch while eating will flush food through the portal too quickly as if it were a slider food. You don't want that. You won't feel satiated as quickly and may continue to eat too much food.

Your doctor probably prefers you to not drink and you should follow his orders. But, there is still an ongoing debate over this subject and some doctors allow their patients to sip Water a minute after each bite.

Are you from Blackfoot? My first job out of high school was at the Kraft Foods cheese plant in Blackfoot. Graduated from Marsh Valley.

I found when I started working on no drinking/eating at the same time, I made sure I did not have a glass anywhere near me or I would drink out of it. Nowadays it is just second nature and I don't ever have a glass unless I am at a restaurant where the waiter pesters enough- then I get one to shut them up and don't drink out of it.

I hate it when they come around the first time, take drink orders, say "are you sure you don't want a drink?" and then every time they come back they ask again.

You know it's funny.... In the beginning it was the hardest thing not to drink while eating. Now I don't even think about it...

Like tmf said, it gets easier. Ive read it takes 12 days to establish a habit but not sure how long it takes to break a habit! I drink my milk or Water or beverage before I eat. Then I'm not thirsty. I've seen on this site that some drs say to wait 30 minutes to eat after drinking but that doesn't make sense. liquid should pass right thru. My dr says drink then wait 5 minutes then eat. It really makes it easier if you are hydrated to begin with. AND great idea not to have a glass at the table at home.

For me I found that once I got good restriction it was really uncomfortable to drink while eating. You may find as you go forward and reach restriction that you really can't drink comfortably while you eat. This in and of itself helped me to quit.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
