I'm just curious is there anyone who followed thier pre op diet to the T but when it was time

for surgery the doctor didn't place the band because your liver still wasn't small enough. That's a fear I have. I start my pre op diet on August 23rd and I'm going to follow it perfectly but this thought keeps popping in my head !

I have heard of patients who left the hospital with no band because once their surgeon got in there, the liver was too fatty and enlarged to safely operate around.

However, the only time I've heard of this happening is if the person has a pre-existing condition that effects their liver or they completely disregarded the pre-op diet. I've never known anyone who followed their surgeon's pre-op diet (and no liver conditions) that wasn't banded because of their liver.

If you follow your doctors orders, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Best wishes to you.

My doctor told me there was only one time in all the time he had been doing the surgery that he couldn't do it because the persons liver was so "buttery" (his phrase) I think that if you stick to your diet and try to start incorporating a lot of raw veggies and fruits in now, you should be fine. Its the fats and sugars that cause the problems in your liver.

I started replacing two meals with Protein

shakes a few days ago just so I get used to it. Unfortunately I start my Pre op diet in the middle of my vacation. We are bringing our own food to

cook so being around food is not a problem

it's not being able to drink alcohol that's going to get to me :-/ but OH WELL it'll be worth it!

my dr told me of 2 or 3 people he did not do the surgery on because their liver was not shrunk enough

most likely cheating on their pre op (that is why i chose not to cheat on my all liquid 2 week pre and 2 week post ops)

I am on my 14th day of my liquid diet and I am on the 3rd of the 14th day of clear liquid diet. I had to do only 3 shakes of 27gram of whey Protein and Water. I became constipated half way through it and too a laxative before I got to my second week and the dr told me to eat a few cups of brocolli or something with no or low carb Fiber also I could use very low sodium broth so I I did and I was better but I was worried about being binded still. I was surprised that I was not that hungry, and when I did feel hungry on the diet, drinking flavored water did help. I like the crystal light lemon and tea flavor and I would heat that up when I wanted to drink. I stayed away from caffine as well. I did drink Decaf herbal tea. I am hungry now and I am allowed clear juices no surger not diet, but I have to drink diet cranberry juice. The juice have a lot of suger and calories and carbs, but they want that because your body needs those things. I have been tired on the and have not exercised on the 3 day liquid diet. No energy. the juices are 1/2 cup to 1/4 an I probably have had closer to 1/2 to a 1 cup and I am hoping that is not too much sugar. I only lose 9 pounds in 14 days probably because of the Constipation. I will be measuring to see if I loss inches. Remember my liquid diet was very strick. I have loss 25 pounds since May 22, so I think my liver has sprunk by now. So if you have been losing weight during this process and you stick to your liquid diet you should be fine. Good luch.

That was one of the things I was absolutely afraid of. I have known a few people who went through the surgery but had that problem, even with following the directions exactly from the surgeon, and couldn't get surgery done.

Having read so much on here about liver shrinking (my doctor does'nt require a pre op diet); I asked how mind looked. The doctor just shrugged it off like it did'nt matter at all and said "It was fine."

I had lost a total of 100 pounds preop so that may have something to do with it.

There are several good reasons why well-informed surgeons do ask people to lose some weight before banding. It's not only because the liver may be too fatty to place the band. Usually they can plance it even without liver shrinkage. Reducing fat from the liver before surgery gives the surgeon more room to get underneath the liver and move things around to place the band. The less fat on the liver -- the better the band fits into place around the stomach.

I think my Dr. explained that the one person he couldn't do, with the "buttery liver" was because they have to use a retractor to hold the liver up out of the way when they are doing the lapband, and when he pulled the retractor back against the liver it slid into the liver cutting into it. So definately do the right pre-op diet... makes me shiver to think of that happening.

oh yeah I'm definitely going to do it right without a doubt that wasn't the question. the question was experiences with doing it right and still not having the liver be small enough.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
