What is the best way to get our daily Protein? (aside from food of course)

Well, if you aren't getting it from protein shakes/supplements, what other way IS there? Are you still on liquids? If so, then you shouldn't be worried about calories yet. I'm sure you aren't getting in too many.. are you?

Hi Sue,

I'm eating solid food now, but you mis-understood me. I meant what are the good Protein sources aside from food.< /p>

I know shakes is one of them, but I think its very high in calories, so what are the other options (pills, powder, etc...) or maybe even some low calorie shakes IF they are avilable....

No, I didn't misunderstand. :)

I'm just wondering why you would want to have a shake or other forms of supplements rather than food. Do you not eat meats?

I get all of my Protein from foods. Mostly animal Proteins. I eat between 60 and 100 grams of Protein per day, typcially averaging about 76grams and I eat between 800 and 1,000 calories per day. I'd rather eat real food and get my protein in than take supplements or drink shakes.

I actually love meats :)

But sometimes, I just eat small amounts of food and I feel afraid that I won't get the minimum required amount of Protein, thats why I want to make it a habit of taking these suppliments to make sure I'm getting the needed protien....

Aside from foods like tuna, ground meat, etc., I drink a shake everyday. I am tight in the mornings and my doctor says that a shake is a good source of Protein. Atkins Advantage shakes have 170 calories and 20 grams of protein. I also drink low calorie orange juice with a scoop of Protein Powder. Hope this helps.

I'm using Protein powder added to a slim fast Protein Shake for a total of 30. It is over 300 calories, though. But it is low in fat, has Fiber and is a pretty good protein bang for the buck. But I am also eating chicken and fish. But unless it is done right, I choke. I usually have my shake for Breakfast because it is fast and controls my hunger.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
