Gas Problem & "throwing Up" Burps?

Recommended Posts

I'm going crazy with the gas. It's not just the burping, which I can handle, but it's the pain. My stomach gets distended, like a rock, and the band hurts!

Last night, after pacing in the living room for 1/2 hour at 2am (yes, I woke up because it was hurting) my mouth filled with saliva and ran to the bathroom to throw up... Pretty immediately I did throw up, but not liquid or food -- I threw up the biggest burp you've ever heard. THREE times I threw up, each time just huge, tortured burps. I felt better immediately and then went back to sleep...

Has anyone else experienced this?? I'm 4 months post-surgery, so this is NOT a recovery issue. But I'm a little at my wits end and need to find some way to lessen the pain. I'm living on TUMS at the moment...

Help!

Does this throwing up happen regularly or was this the first incident? Maybe your band is too tight or you had a little swelling for some reason. How soon before bed did you eat or drink. I need at least a couple hours to digest before bed, if I don't I will have a foamy backup a couple hours later.

There should be no pain. If you are taking small bites, eating slowly and not overeating etc. then there is something wrong. Did this start with your last fill or have you had this problem from the beginning?

This was the first time I've thrown up gas (second time throwing up anything) and the band is not too tight... I can pretty much eat anything, seldom get stuck and I opted to only get a teeeeeny fill last time because I'm going on vacation soon and don't want to get stuck while i'm away... And in fact, I even had an upper GI done about a week ago because of this... She said the band is perfect, the Fluid flew down with no problem, and in fact, there's not even a pouch I'm open so wide... But she did see an unusual amount of gas, and said that some people just swallow more air than other people...

Did you have prior gassiness? I'm just wondering ? Sorry I know it's kinda personal , but I asked the surgeons office yesterday about my burping. It sea since 5 months ago starting the pre op program I must drink 'wrong'. I burp a lot and haven't even had the band. But they told me I'll be fine. Just wondering how I'm gonna Do- I get banded in 11 days.

I know I seem to burp an awful lot since being banded.

Being as you were awakened during the night with it, so it wasn't anywhere near a time you'd just eaten, it is either the band itself (not eating issues) or possibly even a digestive issue that has nothing to do with the band.

This is probably a weird question, but do you snore? Could you have gulped air in your sleep causing the problem?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
