Pcos.. Symptoms?

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me what your symptoms of PCOS are? Everyone at work says i need to get tested for it (work in ER ).. in the past 6months months i have gained weight, hair in falling out, tired all the time (have sleep apnea which is well controlled with CPAP), irregular periods, headaches and super dry skin... Doc has checked thyroid multiple times with other labs and "everything is normal" per them... Something isnt "normal"

Thanks!

I had/was

-overweight/obese

-no periods

-facial hair

-skin discoloration around my neck

-hair falling out

-severe acne all over my body

-high levels of testosterone

-also I heard to check and see if your index finger is shorter than your ring finger, that could be a indicator of PCOS- I read it on yahoo.

Your doctor can run some lab work and better diagnose though. I would get checked. PCOS can be controlled.

Please remember that not all PCOS patients necessarily have cysts on their ovaries. PCOS is basically a hormonal imbalance that may present with ovarian cysts. The major signifiers are irregular periods, trouble conceiving, facial hair, darkened neck area, potential blood sugar problems. It took 2 years to get my PCOS diagnosis. What I can encourage you about is.... After losing 30lbs already, my periods are regular, facial hair is not as abundant as before, I no longer have the "dark" patchy skin on my neck.

The best test to ask your doctor for is testosterone, and free testosterone. I just had a follow up and all of my hormones are within normal limits. PCOS people are known for belly fat and the difficulty in losing the belly fat! E lap band was the best decision I ever made!!!

Btw I am a nurse as well!! ;) if u need more info feel free to contact me!! Good luck to u!!!

5/28/12 pre-op diet started (217lbs) 6/14/12 Surgery 1.8cc added to 10cc band (205lbs). 7/17/12 1st fill (194lbs). 7/24/12 (191lbs)

My main symptoms were unexplained weight gain and severe cramps. I also had hair in places they shouldn't be. Eventually to caused other problems, I have now had a complete hysterectomy. Since then my excess hair is better and I don't gain weight like I did before. The lapband is taking care of the weight from the PCOS. Some people say that PCOS is caused by weight, but that is not true, my symptoms started while I still weighed 140 pounds. If you are wondering call around to ob/gyn's and ask if they treat patients for PCOS. Tell them you want to be checked for it. This keeps you from dealing the drs. that will just tell you your crazy and that you need to eat healthier.

My symptoms are irregular/light periods, infertility, facial hair, weight gain/slow at losing, especially belly fat. As someone said it is caused by hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance, high testosterone levels. Mine was diagnosed with a blood test after fertility issues and several other misdiagnosis.

I just got banded last week, but I am hoping this will help with my weight as well as some of the other PCOS issues.

I advise you to get tested.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
