Feeling Full Or Bloated One Week Post Op

Recommended Posts

Today is August 1 and I had Surgery on July 26. I have been on a liquid diet which consists of mostly Protein Shakes (15-20 grams Protein - 1-15grams of carbs). I have the feeling of being stuffed or bloated alot of the time. I am taking gas-x for gas but wonder if this is normal. I have my post op visit tomorrow and will talk to the Dr. about it. Just wondering if anyone had a similar expreiance and when you started to get your appitite back.

Thanks,

Chris

I was banded on July 27th, and I'm right there with you. I have zero appetite and have been sipping Water constantly, as I know this is important. I have been lucky to get down one serving of Protein Drink a day. I've had a bit of broth, some very thin cream of chicken Soup, a bit of thin cream of wheat. That's been about it for the week. The nurse told me not to worry about it this week but make sure Im drinking water. She said everything is still swollen and settling into place. I have had lots of gas but no nausea to speak of and no vomiting. So I guess that's good. Im very tired and have been sleeping quite a bit. I've been walking a bit, not enough, it just seems to drain me if I go out in the heat. All in all , not too bad I guess. I see my doctor tomorrow too.

I had my surgery on July 13 and have been hungry ever since. I cannot wait to get my fill so I won't be hungry. Was tired the first couple of days and now feel great. Lost 18 lbs first week and none since. Was told this is normal. I thought something was wrong with me but others have said they didn't lose much before the first fill. Hope you feel better. I had gas pain for at least a week.

yes it is because you are healing and most likely have some swelling. this is what restriction (they tell me feels like). it will pass as the days go by. gas x helps some people but it did not help my (gassy side). just keep drinking and focus on the protein as that will keep you full. my appetite came back rather quickly but being on liquids, i lived for my Protein Shakes and sf popsicles and drained chick Soup mixed with ff chick broth.

all the best. sounds like you are healing well.

Walking, walking and more walking is really the only thing that helps. Gas pain especially in the left shoulder is pretty common. I had it in the shoulder and my lower stomach area. Walking and drinking plenty of Fluid is all that helped me get by.

Banded on the 26th, too. I had that feeling of bloating the first few days. It is gone & now I'm hungry.

I talked to the nurse at my doctor's office during those first few days. Told her I was having a hard time getting in a second shake. She suggested getting Protein shots from GNC or Walmart. They were much easier to get down than another shake.

I started getting rid of the bloating when I went walking. It's been around 110 degrees here, so I get my daughter to drive me to the mall to get in my walking there. I like fantasizing now about which of those cute clothes I'm going to buy when I get skinny. Lol!

Me too! My surgery was July 25 . I was told I would feel bloated for probably 10 days. They poked around in there after all. I also had hiatal hernia that they repaired. My doctor told me about 40% of his patients have one. Did you? Hang in the!

Everything you are experiencing is normal, at times I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. As others have said walk, walk, walk, I found it so helpful when the shoulder pain hit, when it was intense I'd lay flat on my back between walking for about ten minutes and breath, then walk, lay down then breathing deeply and it usually helped relieve it for me within half an hour. By the end of two weeks I felt normal again. I've also been told the shoulder pain is refered pain from the diagram when it spasms as the gas only takes about three days or so to be eliminated from your system. Not sure how true that is.

Thanks for the reply's !

Yes I did have a hiatal hernia, my insurance paid to fix that!

I actually got a little bit of an appitite last night and had my first mushy food in seven days. I had 1/4 cup of tuna and some Bush's baked Beans. I practiced the 1 minute between bites thing, which slows down the eating process. I used my Iphone stopwatch to get a real idea of the time between bites.

I had a mental craving for Bush's baked Beans since I put it on my list of "mushy foods". I visit the Dr. Office today. I had a shake for Breakfast and am thinking for dinner that I am going to make ground meat with green chili's cooked in, maybe some onions and bell peppers....

Thanks. I already feel better. I also had a heital hernia. So now I just have to wait to heal and continue to form my new habits. I have already lost 9 pounds which is helping motivate me ( that and the thought that I choose this to be healthier).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
