Diva Down 26 Posted July 31, 2012 Hey all!!!! I have a predicament. You see, my birthday was yesterday... I drank alcohol on Saturday, but was still within my caloric intake. Well last night, I ate according to planning on drinks for my birthday, but unfortunately, I over drank with the alcohol..... Ultimately my body is more supseptible to alcohol since being banded. I've only PBed a few times, but last night I actually threw up..... Now I'm nervous about band slippage.... I'm so mad at myself... And I am not a huge drinker to begin with. Good thing is everything feels fine. No pain, reflux or anything, am I being a worry wart? I tell ya, I will not partake in any more alcoholic beverages in large quantities ever again.... Funny thing is, I had only 1 drink and 1 shot... Guess I'm a lightweight lol. How will you know if there is band slippage? 5/28/12 pre-op diet started (217lbs) 6/14/12 Surgery 1.8cc added to 10cc band (205lbs). 7/17/12 1st fill (194lbs). 7/24/12 (191lbs)
sHeLLaBee 130 Posted July 31, 2012 No, you are fine. =) I throw up on a weekly basis, trying to figure out what I can and can't eat... As long as you have no pain or anything relativiely different compared to the norm, don't stress! 1 Diva Down reacted to this
marfar7 1,533 Posted July 31, 2012 I agree. It took me almost 3 yrs of regular vomiting to slip my band (not telling you to do so, however). I doubt if it'll slip on your first vomiting episode. That said, I definitely don't recommend vomiting regularly. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Sometimes it happens. Toddy 758 Posted July 31, 2012 I'm curious about those that "vomit" frequently. Are you talking about a forceful expulsion from your stomach, or a regurgitation from your pouch?? I vomited for the first time yesterday, twice. Shortly afterwards I started having severe chest pains, severe enough I thought it was my heart and went to to the ER. The pain built in intensity to the point that it hurt all the way from my shoulders to my abdomen and all the way around my back. It took three doses of dilaudid to get the pain under control once they determined it wasn't heart related. They called my band doctor, and he had me transferred by ambulance to his ER. He removed 3 cc's of fill and I was still pretty out of it from the drugs. They kept me overnight to check my esophagus and the placement of the band this morning, and while it had moved slightly, it hasn't slipped. When I questioned him about what could have caused that horrific pain, he said the vomiting could have caused it. The band is not made for stuff to be forcefully ejected through it. We talked about the distinction of regurgitation vs. vomiting. I know I was lucky this time and now that I've learned my lesson I will be much more careful what and how I eat in the future. 1 Diva Down reacted to this
Sombra1718 55 Posted August 1, 2012 I have only lost around 40 lbs but it drastically changed how I process alcohol which I figured out the really hard way the other night. I used to have very high tolerance for a lot of hard alcohol and every once in a blue moon I would drink quite a bit. I hadn't drank in many months and decided to try it. I only really remember the first few shots but after that things got pretty ugly. I was really sick to my stomach the next day but I was able to not throw up. I'm glad to hear it won't be the end of my band if I do throw up. But yea alcohol is out.
Jean McMillan 2,973 Posted August 1, 2012 Symptons of band slippage include the inabiity to drink or eat, chest pain, heartburn, reflux, night cough. 1 Diva Down reacted to this
Jean McMillan 2,973 Posted August 1, 2012 Frequent regurgitation or vomiting is bad for you and bad for your band. No one should tolerate that for any reason or any length of time. 2 fericito and Diva Down reacted to this
Diva Down 26 Posted August 1, 2012 Thank you all for your responses!! The good thing is I did vomit from my "lower" stomach but it was only liquid then dry heaves.... I am still trying to get back to eating right. I'm only eating 500-600 cals a day!!! But no pain!! 5/28/12 pre-op diet started (217lbs) 6/14/12 Surgery 1.8cc added to 10cc band (205lbs). 7/17/12 1st fill (194lbs). 7/24/12 (191lbs)
Justme9786 50 Posted August 1, 2012 Not sure if you saw my post a few days ago about my experience, but i had the same thing, but i actually threw up like 15x! Just didn't eat enough before drinking. Happens. Anyways, i gave my band a rest for a few days and it's fine. No odd symptoms, can eat normal, etc. So you should be fine!

So sorry for that horrible experience! Yes, the Dr is correct, the band indeed is not meant for things to "come back up" especially from lower stomach. It's only happened once to me (recently) and it was very painful and a HORRIBLE experience, due to alcohol, so I've learned my lesson as well.

angieburns00@hotmail.com 0 Posted August 2, 2012 My husband and I just went to Seattle and took a cruise ship to Canada .. I made the mistake of thinking I would not get sea sick and guess what I did .. At first I was just feeling a little crappy but as we spent more time on the bus ride after the cruise it got worse .. I tried to throw up but also so afraid of the slippage .. Of course nothing came up .. I felt so bad .. We ended up going to a pharmacy and I got done stuff called gravol .. Which helped so much .. Got back ok .. But I gotta tell you .. My tummy still isn't feeling great ! I also feel so restricted can't seem to eat anything but a few bites of anything !! So I guess alcohol or just getting sick it's all so scary about slippage and what do you do ???
Diva Down 26 Posted August 3, 2012 Well I'm back to normal now.... Regular eating commenced 3 days after drinking and my appetite resurged with a vengeance!! No pain or anything.
