I'm new to this thread, glad to found you all. I weight 301 at my pre-op visit and 286.5 at my one week check up. I was banded (sounds like something we use to do to the chickens on the farm when growing up.) march 20th. My BMI was 54. What really stinks was I has lost one inch in height, where did it go. I' m 55 and just want to play with my grandkids and be around to see them grow. Feeling great now.

Dr. Nigro, Kansas City did my surgery. I really am enjoying this thread. Keep up the good work you all are doing.

Christy,

I had my surgery with Dr. Rumbaut and I wouldn't change a thing about it! I already had a fill here in the states and am very happy with that doctor, but I'm seriously thinking about returning to Mexico this summer just to get a follow-up with Team McDreamy. The whole experience was great.

As for the pre-op diet, I had to do TEN DAYS. If you have to do that many, let me tell you that if I can get through it without cheating anyone can. It wasn't easy, and I did have a couple of break downs, but I'm so glad I stuck to it (during the holidays no less). I didn't have to deal with the disappointment over not being able to eat as much after surgery because I was happy just to eat/drink anything beyond Clear Liquids.< /p>

You can do it, I promise you.

It has just really been a discouraging three days thus far...the Protein Shakes make me gag and heave...it's everything I can do to keep them down...none have come back up yet, but I have to sit quietly for 30 minutes or so everytime I drink one and wait on the nausea to pass.

I am sure everyone else goes through difficulties with one thing or another, but I just keep asking myself if I really want to do this...it's like I'm saying goodbye to a best friend and know that I'll never have the comfort of their presence again...Silly, but real nonetheless! I actually spent an hour or so crying about it today...how dumb is that????

My hubby starts his 7-day preop tomorrow (I had to do the first three days solo), so I will have a partner with me...Maybe that will make it easier.

I realized today that I accidentally cheated...I took a can of vegetable Soup and blended it with Water and unflavored Protein Powder and I forgot to add the carbs and Protein for the 2 1/2 servings in the can. That means I ended up going over by about 10 grams of protein and 12 grams of carbs. And yes, the soup was equally as hard to get down with the unflavored powder.< /p>

Christy - it sounds like maybe you are just really swollen, still.

Sorry you are having a hard time.

Are to taking tiny sips and waiting for the liquids to pass through between sips?

If not, that might help.

Also - try making any liquids as thin as possible.

Cry if you need to. It's really ok.

Hugs! Hope you feel better, soon.

What kind did you try, and how did you make it? I'm going to guess you mixed it with water...? I cannot tolerate them unless I mix then with milk, even if it's the Carb Countdown fat free milk. It really makes a big difference. (And I don't like milk... up until I tried mixing a Protein Drink in it, out of pure desperation, I'd not had any for nearly 15 years). I don't know if something like that milk is allowed on your pre-op, this kind has something like 90 cal, 0 fat, 3 carb.

Part of it (IMO) is the texture. Something that's watery, but tastes like chocolate or whatever, just isn't right. It's like drinking a non carbonated drink out of a can. Part of it is taste - the milk "creams" out the flavor a bit - sort of blends things together.

For me this made 100% of the difference.

If you can't find one with a flavor you can stand, try "Six Star". It's by fat the best I've found, and I've tried A LOT. Well, let me specify. The EAS whey makes the best chocolate. The Six Star makes the best vanilla, and second best chocolate. IMO. :)

I have found that I need a variety of shakes/drinks. Some I just can NOT tolerate. Health Wise has fruity flavored high Protein Drinks that I like (aspertame free). I have also found a pink lemonade, hot chocolate, a pudding mix(that you can mix with ice, water, and Peanut Butter, as a Meal Replacement shake), and I use a variety of canned shakes... like slim fast- high Protein, or low carb. I also like Atkins Advantage. I can not keep from gagging on EAS shakes and do not know why. For me variety is key.

You may be able to find it at healthyweightsupermarket... it's a local place here in Springfield Missouri. It was started by a bariatric doctor named Brenda Wells. I think you may be able to get information or order from them. Give it a try/search.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
