What To Expect (Weight Loss Wise) In The First 6 Weeks

Recommended Posts

I was banded on July 9th and have lost only 9 pounds so far. I guess I expected to lose more weight in weeks 2 & 3 and am feeling a little disappointed. For those of you who have been banded for a longer period of time, what were your weight loss experiences? I know that everyone is different and so are their weight loss experiences. I was just curious as to what to expect over the next 3 weeks until I go to my 6 week follow up. Thanks! :D

9lbs is awesome and remember the first weeks are for healing. Don't stress yourself about not losing enough just yet. At my six weeks I lost 20lbs and I didn't really feel like I lost that much. My doctor was so excited that I lost that much weight so I say 9 lbs is still super awesome.

Thanks possum & Sandra! You are right ... I did forget about the healing in the first 6 weeks. I guess I'm a little impatient & expected to lose a little more weight (a pound or so) each week since my diet is so different. Thank you both for the support and helping to refocus me!

I really did not weigh myself at home until I saw my doctor for my follow up. The first 6-8 week are for healing not worry. When I did have my first post op visit, I was down 20lbs. I felt that was awesome for me! I now weigh myself dAily every morning, some say not to but I feel it is best for my situation. I don't get depressed if the weight goes up...... I just figure out what caused it, learn from it, and move on!

I hear ya candtwalker ... I was weighed at my 1 week post op visit, I have another apointment in 3 weeks. I have only weighed myself once since then. I didn't want to drive myself insame with constant weighing in at home. I may end up doing that though since I am so afraid of gaining weight. It took a year to go through this whole process and I don't want to screw it up.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but honestly you shouldn't expect to lose any weight at all the first 6 weeks. That is what my surgeon told me. Many of us actually GAINED weight during the first month or two. You're still healing, so a 9lb loss is nothing to sniff at! I recommend not weighing yourself at all for the first month.

The first 4-6 weeks are for healing, not losing, so for you to lose anything at all is great. It's not uncommon for people not to lose any during this time and even gain a little.

My best advice is to put your scale away until you're at least a month post op and on solid food again. In the meantime, just try to make good food choices and focus on healing. The losing will come soon but now isn't the time to worry about it.

I'm about three and a half weeks banded and I've lost 17 pounds.

That being said much of it is going from a soda addict to only Water, being pretty strict on my calorie intake, and I've been active since the day after my surgery (walked down the block the next day and now I'm able to go on easy, short hikes).

Also I think a big factor is how heavy you are to begone with. I started at 318 so I can expect to have a bigger loss than say some one who is like 200.

Congrats on your 9 that's awesome!

I think everyone is different depending on where they start. Those with more to lose generally lose faster or a bit more in the beginning. Those with lower BMI typically are a bit slower, but everyone is different.

I was told that the first 6 weeks are about healing and not weight loss. Don't get down with how much you've lost. Once you start getting your fills, thats when it all comes together.

That's 9 pounds you can say good riddance to :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
