Swelling/Water Weight Gain after Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else remember gaining a lot of weight right after surgery (the 2-3 days after, I mean) due to Water retention and/or swelling?

I've gained 10 lbs since my removal surgery 2 days ago and I've hardly consumed any calories at all. Of course, what I HAVE consumed has been broths that are high in sodium. Still, that seems extreme to me.

Anyone go through anything similar with any surgeries you've had? Is this remotely normal?

Sorry you are going through this. Did they give you a lot of IV fluids? Perhaps the IV fluids along with the sodium is the problem.

I would definately talk to your doctor about it, perhaps he could give you some Water pills or something if he thinks that's all it is.

Take care!

My Dad just had surgery (Feb 20) and gained a ton of Water weight from the IVs. His surgery was long (he had a Warthins tumor removed from his Parotid gland in his neck-benign) and he peed forEVER for days getting all the Fluid out. So, yeah, it sounds normal to me. Hang on a few more days and give your body some time. When it doesn't need the hydration so much it will let it go. Drink your water! :hat:

Another gainer here. I didnt weigh for 2 days and when I did I was still up 6 lbs. It does come off over the next few days. I assumed it was a combination of the I.V. fluids and fluids from the swelling. Hope you are doing okay with the unbanding, you've been through the wringer.....

Oh definitely Jonathan!

Of course when I had my band removed I was 15 pounds dehydrated (230) when I know my regular weight at that time was 245. After my band removal surgery I was 255, but that 10 pounds came off with drinking lots of Water.< /p>

Take care guy!

I was 306 after surgery, but a week later, I'm back down to 292. The sudden gain scared me, but all is well now.

Thanks y'all.

Jonathan

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
