Any Tips On How To Mentally Prepare For The Band?

Recommended Posts

The surgeons office just called me to tell me that on august 16th they can do the surgery!!

i'm legit FLIPPING OUT!!! (In a good way :) )

I DO NOT want to go into this unprepared. I realize that it's impossible to fully be prepared, and I will be treading in unknown waters for the first while, but for now I want to to the best i can in terms of prep.

Does anyone have any links to good articles/blogs/sites with good prep info?

Anyone have any tips/advice for a newbie?

Anything would be extremely helpful

Thanks!!!

Well you're in the right spot for starters. :)

You should be getting a guide on things to do from your doctor or the surgeon's office. Make sure you follow their guidance on what to do. Drink Water.

You will make it through this and you will have some jitters. This is a great site with awesome support from members that are pre-op, post-op, and life beyond.

Expect that after the procedure you will not be 100% for a while. I'm still struggling with this and I was banded almost 3 weeks ago. Remember that this takes time. The band is a tool, it won't do all the work for you. Drinking Water is good for you to start doing now (if you don't already).

Good luck and ask away! :D Congrats!

I had a similar situation. Once I got approval, my surgery was scheduled two and a half weeks later. My head was swimming. The surgeon had me begin the Sugar Busters diet two weeks before. The surgery went great.

What I would tell you is that your life is about to change. Its going to be very different at first, mentally and physically. The first six weeks are for healing. Be patient as possible as your body heals. Stock up on Protein drinks, sugarfree frozen treats, cream of everything Soup (ha) and flavored Water.

Before you know it you will be on your way to a healthier life. You can "shop in your closet". (all the clothes that use to be too tight)

Good Luck!

Hi,

I am in a similar situation. My doctors office office called on Tuesday 7/24 and I will be banded on Tuesday 7/31. I have to be on a pre-op diet for that week. The diet is phase one of the south beach diet. I have been good and not even wanting to cheat until tonight. I really wanted a glass of wine with dinner but I refrained...I am so greatful that I have been able to stay with it.

However, now I'm starting to worry about what I'm missing in my prep for operation .

I'm on a mobile device, so can't write a huge post for you.

I would really recommend that you start practicing eating habits for the band- no drinking with meals, Protein first, and smaller portions. I'd get rid of junk in the house to ease the Desire to eat it.

Also, make sure to start drinking 64+ ounces of Water.< /p>

Being steadfast and unwavering to cheat will help you get through it. When I was going through my pre-op diet I was on Adkins phase 1. Not hard to do but when you're at a bbq and they have cake, hamburgers, and chips and you can't have any of it... I went to the store and bought some salad mix. The hardest part of the get together was staying away from the bread and cake. So I took myself out of the room. I went and sat outside to chill away from the temptations.

If you have the resolve to do this, you will do it and be successful at it. I strongly agree with removing temptations from your home. Easier not to eat it if it isn't there. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
