Hello I am new to this site and need a little insight. I had my first bariatric consultation and I am stuck at whether or not I should go for the band or the sleeve. Did anyone else struggle with this decision and if so what helped you make up your mind. Thanks

Hello and welcome to lapband talk! I'm just going to copy and paste my answer to a very similar question. I hope you find it helpful! :

I chose the band because it is the lesser invasive than the other surgeries. The band has lower complication rates. The band is reversible. They aren't cutting anything out from your body or rerouting anything. The other surgeries have trouble with absorbing Vitamins. You can still vomit with the other surgeries. If you are careful to take small bites and remember to chew well, I don't think you will have a problem with the band. Down the road if anything does go wrong, you can always get the sleeve or another weight loss surgery if they come out with something new ( like the sleeve plication). I would rather keep my options open with the band. You do lose weight slower, however over time you will get there. I'm in no rush. It took me 21 years to gain this weight, I don't expect to lose it in 21 days. Good luck with whichever route you go, I'm sure you will be successful either way! In the end, it comes down to your personal decision. My surgeon pushed for the sleeve, I pushed for the band! Haha best wishes!

Thank you so much for your insight. I am starting all my testing next week and have to make a decision very soon. I like the idea of the band being a tool and not something so permanent.

You're welcome! I hope I helped a little bit! Exactly, none of the surgeries are going to magic. Even with the sleeve or bypass, a lot of patients gain back the weight if they don't change their eating habits and commit to the new lifestyle. Like you said it is a tool and the band is not a permanent option. Good luck!

the decision is ultimately up to you (and your surgeon)

i was uncomfortable having my stomach/intestines cut/removed. once that is done, there is no going back.

i was more comfortable with the band. sure it can be removed if needed but it is meant to last forever.

read and research and ask alot of questions.

the band wont make you lose weight. it will help you but you have to do the majority of the work by eating healthier and exercising. the band is a plastic band that will make you eat less.

good luck with whatever you decide. all the best

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
