I've been reading this board for a while, so I thought I would introduce myself. I'm just getting started on the bandwagon. I'm a 34-year-old single mom of a 1-year-old. Today, at my first visit with the surgeon, I weighed in at 301 pounds. Sweet baby Jesus, I can't believe that number. I've been heavy all my life, but never this big.

So, I decided to do something about it and I choose the band. It seems the best for me. I had my first meeting with the surgeon today. On Friday I meet with the nutritionist for the first time. I have to do 3 months with a nutritionist. Can anyone tell me what does the nutritionist have me do??

I also have to make an appointment for a psych eval. Also, what do they want to know? And Saturday morning I'm getting a blood test and will be handing in my stool sample (I just gagged).

So there it is. I'm super excited to get going!!

Megan

I had to bring in a food log for one week prior to my meeting with the nutritionist we went over the pros and cons of the choices I made and how I can make them more well rounded and healthier then we went over that changes that I will need to make to live with the lap band and with my diabetes. we talked about the special diet for pre-op & post op and when I get fills. I learned a lot and I have a great nutrtionist I'm going to make future appts with her she really is a wealth of information.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
