Size Of Bites Of Food Trouble

Recommended Posts

I am having trouble eating slowly and taking smaller bites of food. I don't know what to do to try to get this under control. I just bought some toddler utensils because I figured the smaller size of the utensils would help me control the size of the bites of food I'm taking.

Good idea? Bad idea? Any advice? Any other ideas?

Good idea. I use small utensils. I also use the time between bites to cut up my food. My Dr told me to "play" with the food on my plate if I need help waiting between bites. I also use the timer on my phone, I set it for 1 minute. I still have to time myself even after doing this for 6 months.

my food is cut up into very very small bites (maybe the size of a dime or smaller). i eat and chew and chew. i always put my fork (reg size down) in between bites. i am in no rush. i am tasting the food instead of wolfing it down :)

you will get the hang of it

I think it's a very good idea, then once you've mastered it with the toddler utensils you'll be able to easily duplicate it with normal adult ones.

It takes time and practice to get used to. I know I had a week of almost constant stuck episodes after my last fill in May until I finally got the hang of smaller bites.

Get a book or a magazine to read while you eat. At the end of every page, take a bite. There's no easy solution, it's just what may work for you.

That's a great idea! I am not at Muskie or solid food stage yet but went ahead and bought cocktail spoons and forks that match my family's utensils. They are small and I'm hoping it will remind me to eat tiny bites.

I"m almost 3 yrs out and I still have a hard time eating slowly. I learned to eat fast in Army basic training. If you didn't eat within 5 mins, you didn't eat. I've never lost that.. My husband constantly reminds me to slow down. I make the mistake of waiting till Im starving, so I wolf it down.

Small utensils may help the bite size, but not how fast you eat. You have to control this. Over the last over 2 yrs, I vomit frequently from eating too fast. It finally caused a slip recently. So I try really hard to slow it down.

Good luck to u

Marci

buying the smaller utensils was a good idea. Dont beat yourself up. Im having issues at times still with taking very small mouthfuls. i think it can take a long time for our habits to change completely... and im sure that everyone here will agree . Just take a day at a time... if you take a bigger mouthful, take note of it and try better next mouthful. Are you getting too hungry in between meals? perhaps thats one reason why you are taking bigger mouthfuls? if you are hungry, why dont you try having four meals a day? a cup each meal... Protein first. Its worth a try. good luck.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
